#jillcecil @Jill Cecil790 and I overlapped in the @University of Utah ballet department decades ago. Who knew we’d find each other again thanks to one of my best childhood friends and fall deeper and deeper in love with this book project together. #laureninthelimelight grew from my story into a broader artistic vision through Jill’s eyes, and @Jenny Barlow helped us go even further over one wild weekend in the middle of the pandemic when I flew to salt lake and we spent a day at #barlowarts (now part of @Ballet West Academy ) having the students and teachers act out the story so that we could take pictures and Jill could illustrate them.
We spent years debating things like what Lauren’s room would look like, how messy her hair would be at different points in the story, and what Bryan would be feeling and what his expression would be near his pointe shoes. When I felt like giving up, Jill told me to keep going. I learned so much from her and all the other artists, students, kids, and friends who helped me think deeper about who this project was for, what it was about, and why it needed to make it to the finish line. I hope as it begins reaching readers, everyone else can take the joy and meaning Jill and I found in loving these characters and spread it further to others searching for their own dreams and place in the world.
Jill, opening this package from you after all these years was a profound reward. Love you!

I had a request for a waltz turn breakdown, so here it is. These are a challenge to teach especially because the turning throws everyone off the one-two-three rhythm. @elenabundren is good at catching me just dancing around. I’m not sure anyone wants to see a 45-year-old retired and out-of-shape ballet teacher doing this stuff on TikTok, but I’m sharing anyway, since I want to normalize it and share combinations. Even if it doesn’t look perfect, it feels great and that’s what matters as a woman at this stage in her life. So go try this one and enjoy!
