when Facebook says its developers, hey, we're having an economic problem, we'd like to increase engagement by your goal, Mr. Developer is 3% or five some number. The developers sit there and they go, Oh, let's see what's engaging. Oh, this terrible thing. All right. Well, and they literally, they, they separate themselves from the dials that are amplifying hate speech.

So we do need to compel transparency because self-regulation is not working and we also need to change the incentive system. Right now there is no there is an automatic immunity from any form of accountability for user generated content, and that may be important in some circumstances, but we need to start engaging in real inquiry about where to draw the line, where and when can and should we be holding platforms accountable? Is it when they recommend as content? Is it when they auto generate pages of hate, extremism of terrorism? We absolutely need to push government to create and update frameworks.

Who's to say that if that event hadn't been on Facebook? Maybe Kyle Rittenhouse wouldn't have heard of it at all. If Facebook had a duty and a responsibility as a technology company, as well as a media company to take down what was advertised as a violent event and it didn't. And there are families every day thinking about their loved ones.

When you think about Fox News and how the advent of Fox News turned a generation of retirees into crazy conspiracy theorists, you know, you hear all of these stories about people whose parents and grandparents, their personalities, their politics change overnight in the media they were consuming. We're seeing that same thing happen online.
