Nonkululeko Mputi, our dedicated 2023 Spark Impact Facilitator, hosted a thought-provoking film screening of "UPRIZE!" at Thuto Ke Tsebo Primary School in Zamdela, Sasolburg, Free State.
The film is directed by Sifiso Khanyile 📽 and it delves deep into the political, social, and cultural forces that shaped the historic June 1976 Soweto Students Uprising. It explores how those courageous ideas transformed into acts of liberation and, ultimately, molded the democratic society we cherish today. 💪
The screening ignited passionate conversations among the bright learners. They discussed the dark era of apartheid and the persisting issue of inequality. Young minds resonated with the bravery of their predecessors who fought inequality head-on.
The most heartwarming moment was when a budding comedian in the class realized the power of his talent to convey vital messages. 🎤 He eagerly embraced the idea of using humor to educate people about critical issues.
Our young scholars also emphasized the importance of preserving history and passing it down to future generations. 📚🌟

Katlego Maake from Matibidi Village, Mpumalanga, is bringing the enlightening film "LOBOLA: A BRIDE'S TRUE PRICE" by filmmaker Sihle Hlophe to Hlong Secondary School. This documentary delves into the age-old practice of lobola, where the bridegroom's family offers cattle or cash to the bride's family just before marriage.
Sihle Hlophe's journey, spanning years leading up to her own wedding day, captures the essence of lobola negotiations from various regions. The film resonates with universal tensions between personal beliefs, familial expectations, cultural respect, and evolving gender roles in the 21st century.
Katlego engaged with grade eleven and twelve high school students and sparked a vibrant discussion on the significance of lobola. Many students, having grown up in families that practice lobola, shared their belief in its importance. It's often said that lobola isn't just a tradition but a bridge to harmonious family life. Not adhering to it might lead to conflicts as the ancestors may not recognize the union.
One student eloquently shared, "In my view, Lobolo is a token of appreciation and family tradition that should be cherished for generations to come."

Sunshine Cinema together with the Konrad Adenauer Foundation's Rule of Law Program for Anglophone Sub-Saharan Africa, based in Nairobi, are launching a series of solar-powered cinema screenings in Kenya in August 2023.
Sunshine Cinema will train two Kenyan Sunbox Ambassadors to facilitate 10 impact screenings of the film "Journey to Justice". The film sheds light on the steps taken by ordinary citizens to actively pursue their rights and attain justice. The trained film impact screening facilitators will use (the Sunbox) solar-powered cinema kit to spark conversations with local communities affected by human rights challenges.

Sunshine Cinema hosted and facilitated the first of the three FREE solar-powered screenings brought to you by kykNET, Silwerskermfees and the City of Cape Town. We kicked off with DOWN SO LONG in Hangberg Recreation Centre-Hout Bay.

2023 Spark, Wilhelmiece Loyd hosted a film screening of PUMLA at Thusho Church in Kimberley, Northern Cape.
This steps for the future film is about Pumla, a bright young girl, who was branded a rebel befor anybody gave her a chance. She drinks, she smokes and likes to hang out with the guys in the alleyways and on street corners. She also had a child at a very young age. Her behaviour often gets her into trouble with the authorities and causes much pain and stress to her mother. Unable to deal with her owdn demons and the perceptions of others, Pumla's lifestyle leads her down a dark and dangerous road.
The audience members at the screening sparked conversation around themes portayed in the film such as; substance abuse, sexual/reproductive health education, peer pressure and the importance of self-love.
Youngsters discussed how they can craft a positive future by confronting peers' missteps, curbing negative peer pressure, avoiding substance abuse, and practicing responsible choices, ensuring better outcomes than amplifying existing home or environmental issues.
