We took disruptive action with Connolly Youth Movement Dublin, Trinity People Before Profit TCD, Time to Act TCD and XR and expressed in our speeches our dissatisfaction with the neoliberal government coalition and highlighted the Green’s complicity in the housing crisis, climate change and the state of Irish education. We also mentioned the lack of action on Direct Provision.

We took this action in part as the event had pre-filtered Q/A and was not about open debate and free exchange - and not a place where our questions critical of the government would have been allowed.

Minister Ryan and the Green Party have blood on their hands by voting to extend the eviction ban and putting thousands of people on the streets, alongside their track record in government of representing corporate interest, not the people's interest - and should expect to be challenged at every occasion!
I spoke at the Hist debate "THB Student Radicalism Has Peaked". In my speech, I attempt to bring light to the fact that there is no real student movement in the Republic of Ireland, only an official student movement composed of student union officers that are co-opted by the capitalist logic of the corporate university. This is because neoliberalism has made them abandon their opposition to social injustice and transformed them into consumer bodies, limiting them to bureaucratic committees and co-governing the "student experience" with senior management. This has resulted in a value dissonance where student unions take progressive positions but do not act to achieve them, rendering them unable to act when vital student services are cut and fees and rents increase. Student unions see no issue despite their mobilizing power faltering, since they measure "mile-wide and inch-deep" engagement, such as how many goodie bags were given out. I conclude my speech by hoping for the rebirth of the student movement that focuses on deep engagement, collective movements, and building institutional student power.

At a Phil debate, I spoke of high fees, unaffordable accommodation, disrespect to students and staff, not to mention the dereliction of duty by university presidents who have not challenged the government on its underfunding of academia over decades.

Consider this a PERSONAL post from me (László Molnárfi) not an offical S4C statement. I don't have another TikTok account. It does not work for me to create a second one.I made this speech at the 4th @tcdsu Council in March 2022. I argue that our student movement, including our unions, favour a friendly relationship with senior management over advocating from the grassroots with the student body. This inability to challenge senior management has led to the co-optation of our student unions, where we can only work in committees but not mobilize alongside students.Do you agree?
