Help Out Buffalo: Vol 16
This is Help Out Buffalo, a series where we volunteer around WNY and show you what to expect, presented by West Herr Cares.
We stopped by the blood donor center to, you guessed it, donate blood.
The cancer center at Roswell Park transfuses over 17,000 blood products each year.
So, why should you donate blood? Because there is a need for platelets and whole blood for cancer patients at Roswell. Platelets expire quickly so donors are needed more than frequently to make sure there is enough for the cancer patients who need it.
When you first arrive you are given a packet with the information you need before donating. Then, you have to answer a few medical questions and you are brought into the room with a nurse to make sure you are 100% good to go to donate.
Once that's all done you are set up to start donating which takes about an hour for blood & 2 hours for platelets.
And obviously you’re given some snacks and apple juice.
The unique thing about donating at Roswell is that you are in the same place as the people you are donating to, you know where your donation is going and it is 100% staying local.
To sign up to donate, you call in advance and have a quick phone pre screening to make sure you’re in good health. Or, you can use their online scheduling system at www.thedonorcenterrpci.com

The Imperial Hotel at 100 in Tokyo was Frank Lloyd Wright’s first international project.
This new exhibition has never before seen pieces from the original architecture of the Imperial Hotel such as pieces saved from the demolition like tiles, bricks, stone blocks, art glass.
You will see and learn more in depth about Wright’s relationship with the Martins during this time of his career. On display are also the original Japanese Prints that Wright brought back. The replicas are on display inside of the Martin House for tours.
When you get your tickets you can spend as much time as you’d like through the exhibition. And in the gift shop is a collection of merch like socks, limited edition notepads, and more
You will be able to experience this collection now through May 12th. So book your tour and experience the Martin House like never before.
