SNP STEAM Academy students learned how to make ka'niwa'therá:'a (mini pack baskets). This incredible opportunity was provided by Mr. Moore, who shared his knowledge of basket making with students and staff. Baskets are an essential part of Hodinohsó:ni’ life. They serve as tools for medicine picking, firewood collecting and corn washing. Baskets are also brought to ceremony throughout the year. Six Nations Polytechnic STEAM Academy students are helping to conduct water quality testing for a research project with McMaster University. Students are currently braiding Indigenous Knowledge with western science to understand the natural world. This project is in collaboration with Indigenous knowledge holders, The Ohneganos Project and McMaster University. Nya:weh (thank you) to all involved in helping our students achieve new skills such as invertebrates sampling and identification, testing for heavy metals in water and Nya:weh to our Indigenous Knowledge Holders for sharing some of that knowledge with our students. #education #indigenous #indigenouseducation #science #indigenousscience
