We have so many heroes and pioneers to remember on this Juneteenth, I chose to take my platform and shine some light on one of our giants, 👉🏾Dr. Amos Wilson.
I got put on to his work very recently, and have been continuing to read his books and watch his speeches. Just type ⌨️in “Amos Wilson” on YouTube or whatever and you’ll see that this was man who should be celebrated in our culture more than he is.
The most amazing thing about him and his work for me is that it led me to learn about more of our radical thinkers who spoke/speak truth to power 💪🏾such as Dr. Runoko Rashidi, Dr. Michelle Alexander, Frantz Fanon, Dr. Frances Welsing, Chris Hani, Walter Rodney, Chancellor Williams, and Maurice Bishop🫡
I don’t wanna confuse you with the title being “DR. AMOS WILSON”. I did not write or perform this as a tribute or unauthorized biography. This title is simply my way of showing gratitude, respect, and to hopefully spread awareness about this great man. So for anyone wanting to get put on to his work like I did start reading 📚”ISSUES OF MANHOOD IN BLACK AND WHITE” then go get one of my favorites from him “AWAKENING THE NATURAL GENIUS OF BLACK CHILDREN”(this one really hit home). How To Pray In A Shootout isn’t a traditional album or EP. I wanted to do something that allowed me to express myself to you more visually as well as challenge me lyrically. This turned into six freestyles, recorded in six parts. Live, with no profanity, no camera cuts, and no lip syncing.
I’m releasing each episode as a visual experience only. That means that these will only be available to view and not played through the traditional DSP’s. By all means though, watch it as much as possible on YouTube, Facebook, etc. But if you want the song’s audio only, you’ll have to get it straight from me. I’ll be giving you the info on how to do that soon too.

When I was 9 years old my mother told me that when I felt like I was in a situation where I couldn’t see a way out the best thing to do was pray. And if I didn’t have time or space to fully pray, then just call his name. Since then I can’t even count how many times I’ve been in some kind of position where I felt helpless, hopeless or and under attack. And all I had time to do was call on Yah. Not loudly, just to myself in a tone quieter than a whisper and I’d get a little bit of light or relief that would help me find my way through it.
That’s how to pray in a shootout. And This is a body of work dedicated to my supporters, to those of us who took the path of hustling hoping to get a chance to see the other side, for my neighborhood out west on Division + Long where my people still trying to make a way for themselves, for all my brothers and sisters in the diaspora getting through the day by the skin of your teeth with sheer will of force and still believing that God can do all things.
I am not a church member, or a spiritual authority, nor anywhere near what some people call a saved and sanctified saint. But I do know we all got our own shootouts that we dealing with. I know firsthand what it feels like to have an attack on your mental state, your emotional wellbeing, or your physical health. I’ve been through it all, but I also know what I’ve come through. I’m still figuring out how to be the perfect husband to my wife, the perfect father to my children, and the perfect leader to the ones who’ve chosen to follow and believe in me. Yet and still, if I never do…All Praises.
