Food writer Omar Mamoon visits so many new spots each year that he rarely gets a chance to visit the same restaurant twice. So when he says he wants to be a regular at Old Mandarin Islamic in the Outer Sunset neighborhood, that means a lot. All of the food served at Old Mandarin Islamic—which has been around since 1997—is halal, so pork is off the menu. But that leaves room for other meats, like lamb and poultry, to shine. And shine they do. Mamoon bestows his ultimate rating of PFG, or “pretty f*cking good,” on one dish in particular: La Si Ni. The poultry and egg-based dish, whose names literally translates to "spicy enough to kill you," is fiery and delicious. Not all decommissioned BART trains go to choo-choo heaven. Sometimes, they go to the mountains instead. Five years ago, East Bay financial adviser and transit aficionado Michael Lin learned about BART’s plans to replace its aging trains, and inquired as to how best to submit a proposal to procure an A2 car, capable of carrying 200 people in what BART calls a “crush load.” Lin now plans to transform the 700 square-foot car into an Airbnb rental space with a small companion house in the Sierra Foothills. The compound will have three or so rooms and accommodate up to eight people. Lin hopes to start construction on the Sierra Train House project in March.
