In the woods of Marin Countyās Mount Tamalpais, where trails wind through towering redwoods, secret hammocks strung together by renegade net weavers offer a secluded perch to take in one of the most expansive views of the Bay Area.
Some of the nets, woven to the trunks of redwoods and moss-laden Douglas firs, hang up to 80 feet above the forest floor and offer a dazzling vista of fog funneling into the bay through San Franciscoās Golden Gate.
But even to the most frequent visitors of the area, many of the locations and creators of these hidden sky hammocks remain a mystery. And the only way to find them without a guide is to walk the forest trails with your neck craned toward the sky.

Get in touch with your creative side at a figure-drawing workshop hosted by Sketchboard, an organization that bills itself as āthe only known workshop series in the Bay Area reflecting the full vibrancy of San Francisco, featuring the bodies of people existing at the intersection of multiple identities.ā
The group attracts a range of hobbyist sketchers and professionals honing their skills who convene several times a month at bars and community spaces throughout the Bay Area in order to draw people whose bodies express the full range of human experience.
This mission has been championed by multidisciplinary artist and model Natalie Gavidia, who took over leadership of the organization in 2018.
āTo put it very bluntly, thereās a lot of white artists that have been running these events for a long time,ā said Gavidia, who identifies as Latino and nonbinary. āI just always wanted to draw people who look like me. I want to draw people on the bus, who I live with.ā
Over the past five years, Sketchboard has broadened its mission to center on marginalized groups. It hires non-white, queer, trans, intersex and disabled art models and aims to help more artists seeāand featureāunconventional bodies.

Food writer Omar Mamoon visits so many new spots each year that he rarely gets a chance to visit the same restaurant twice. So when he says he wants to be a regular at Old Mandarin Islamic in the Outer Sunset neighborhood, that means a lot.
All of the food served at Old Mandarin Islamicāwhich has been around since 1997āis halal, so pork is off the menu. But that leaves room for other meats, like lamb and poultry, to shine.
And shine they do.
Mamoon bestows his ultimate rating of PFG, or āpretty f*cking good,ā on one dish in particular: La Si Ni. The poultry and egg-based dish, whose names literally translates to "spicy enough to kill you," is fiery and delicious. As soon as it arrives at your table, you can smell the spice, see the bright green chilies, bits of orange-tinged chicken, and a pool of red chili oil that signals the heat ahead.
The spice is intense, but the payoff is worth it. Itās PFG.

Drive down U.S. Highway 101 in and around San Francisco, and you're bound to notice a few things: Teslas, potholes and the sheer abundance of tech billboards that make absolutely no sense to most people outside the tech workforce.
The Standard set out to see how many residents and visitors to San Francisco can actually understand the ads placed around the city, and hear their thoughts on whether or not the niche marketing strategies are effective.

Feeling adventurous about mooncakes for this year's Mid-Autumn Festival? Some bakeries in San Franciscoās Chinatown have something new for you to try.
Here in San Francisco, a sizable Cantonese population has long dominated the mooncake market with traditional Cantonese flavors like white lotus seed paste with egg yolk or a popular mix of five types of nuts and seeds, like olive kernels, walnuts, almond, melon seeds and white sesame.
However, some bakeries in Chinatown are choosing to challenge convention a little, developing more modern recipes in an effort to attract younger customers. Watch and tap the link in our bio to see where we stopped.

San Francisco Mayor London Breed proposed new legislation Tuesday that would require people with substance use disorders to seek treatment before the city provides them financial support.
As part of an effort to forcefully steer people into addiction treatment, Breed said the cityās General Assistance programāconsidered a safety net for people who donāt qualify for other means of financial supportāwould start screening its participants for addiction under the legislation. Those who fail the screening would no longer receive financial support unless they enroll in treatment.
However, critics of the city's drug treatment system have said voluntary treatment isnāt widely available or accessible enough for people with addiction.
San Franciscoās General Assistance program administered $30.3 million in the fiscal year 2022. There are roughly 5,200 people currently in the program.

Some 10% of drivers have fallen behind on paying their Bay Area bridge bills, with authorities issuing 12.5 million toll violations in the fiscal year ending in June 2023ātriple the 2019 totalāThe Standard recently reported.
If youāre one of those drivers, you could have a one-time opportunity to get your unpaid late fees forgiven, and some people may qualify for a payment plan for toll fees.
The skyrocketing violations began when toll collection went cashless in March 2020, spurred by the pandemic. In December 2020, the Bay Area Toll Authority paused sending unpaid notices on non-commerical vehicles to the California Department of Motor Vehicles, where they can hold up vehicle registrations. But that pause is set to conclude by the end of this year.

Police statistics tracked by The Standard shows there were 1,500 thefts from vehicles in the city in the last 30 days. Thatās slightly below the pace of 2017, when such crimes reached a peak, but the crime has become so common itās been given its own street slang name in recent years: Bipping. And usage of the term has recently exploded in the lexicon of popular culture.
