Gregory Rick’s work digs into questions of social issues and responsibility, evoking a deep desire for justice and humanity in an inhumane situation.
A student of history, Rick's paintings find the spaces in which his own experiences echo that of his parents, and reverberate across our shared history.
"I see my work as 'History Painting', promoting the obscure, the forgotten, and the commonly known. [It] tethers together seemingly opposing ideas between the personal, the historical and the political. I am painting on a shaky historical line cemented in humility and conviction. I occupy my pictures with characters who serve as archetypes in conjunction with memory and self-exploration, reflecting on the absurdity and monumentality of history."
Find it in the SECA Art Award Exhibition in our free Floor 2 galleries. #bayarea #arttok #veteran #blm #museumtok

Michael Jang's work, "The Whole Story" (2022-23) is a cultural mash-up, referential, irreverent, and remixed over and over since he first put it up last year.
Since then, he's come back a few times, always adding flair and new ideas to his creation. Can you spot all the changes?
Jang’s works exude a sense of solidarity, belonging, and ownership. His art is all around SF, cheekily inserted into the visual landscape of our city.
You can check out "The Whole Story" for yourself in Schwab Hall on Floor 2, then go explore SF and see what else you can find!

⌛⏪Step back 22 years, into the fragmented memories of an alternate reality...
Starting tomorrow, embark on an unusual journey through SFMOMA by participating in one of the museum’s most innovative commissions, Janet Cardiff’s site-specific video walk, "The Telephone Call" (2001/2023). Using a collage of video images, music, ambient sounds, and her own voice, Cardiff’s video walks have long prefigured what today is known as Augmented Reality technology, combining pre-recorded images and sounds with our real-time perception of the same spaces.
On view for the first time in over a decade, The Telephone Call offers a layered experience of museum spaces both past and present, including galleries and public spaces, as well as areas normally off limits to visitors. With her captivating voiceover, Cardiff explores, “how our minds invent scenarios from chance meetings between people.”
The Telephone Call is available for viewing [HOURS TBD]
Check out a smartphone and headphones at the designated kiosk in the Evelyn and Walter Haas, Jr. Atrium on Floor 1 to begin your journey. Proof of admission and photo ID is required. This video walk involves accessing several sets of stairways.

What does it feel like to always be moving between houses and homes?
Conventional notions of home are centered around the stability and security of built structures where private life and daily ritual are shaped by dedicated spaces.
For migrants, domestic spaces and activities are inherently provisional. Caught between a former home and the possibility of returning or resettling elsewhere, life is disrupted and suspended in a period of transition.
With "(a)way station"(1999-2002), Paul Kariouk and Mabel O. Wilson use architecture as a mechanism to consider migration. Building materials, furniture, belongings, and personal stories are compressed into a series of towering structures that present architecture as it is shaped by the experience of migration.
There's only one month left in this exhibition, don't miss it!

Whenever possible, the Bechers attempted to photograph buildings from multiple perspectives, as if it were an object on a revolving table. In this example, it is refreshingly difficult to imagine that these photographs are of the same structure. The Bechers called these sequences "Abwickfungen" which loosely translates as "unwinding" or "unfolding".
⏳ Time is running out on this exhibition! See the beauty of industrial design through the Bechers' eyes on Floor 3 until April 2.

Our newest exhibition, "Corporeal" brings together sculptures that explore the figure—whether whole, fragmented, or implied—to consider our place in the world, both as individuals and collectively. These selected works from SFMOMA’s collection rise from the gallery floor to meet visitors at a human scale.

🐾 No ruff days here! Last weekend we held our Pet Portraits Day in celebration of Joan Brown.
Brown was known for her love of animals, and you can find many depictions of cats and dogs (many of them her own pets!) throughout the exhibition on Floor 7. With this inspiration in mind, we partnered with @sanfranciscospca for an exciting day of live artmaking. Visitors were invited to share a digital photo of their pet with us for the chance to receive an original pet portrait made by one of 50 local artists or kids participating in our Family Programs.
Thank you to everyone who attended and helped make today a dog-gone great day!

From the moment Gordon Cook introduced Joan Brown to open-water swimming, she remained in thrall of the pleasure she found being in the water.
Brown was convinced that the water of the San Francisco Bay was the key to the city's mystique. In 1975, she said, "There is still this damn psychic energy I've talked about that has to do with this place and this body of water."
She swam daily and in turn, her fascination with being in the water energized her creative life.

It looks like snow in San Francisco ❄️
The Earth’s polar regions have captured our collective imagination for centuries. Artist Julian Charrière has spent years at the Earth’s remote and hostile poles, exploring humanity’s connection with these otherworldly environments which have come to represent just how precarious our future is.

Yesterday we shared how Joan Brown loved dogs. But was she a bigger fan of cats?
Brown's love of animals was limitless. She kept many animal companions over the course of her life, at one point taking care of 16 cats. She would even be audited by the IRS for listing a cat as an income tax deduction. But she successfully argued that her tabby, nicknamed “Donald the Deductible” by friends, was a live-in model, and therefore all veterinary, kennel, and related expenses were rightfully included on the forms.
