Nigel's Evolution: From Hurricane to Post-Tropical Cyclone 🌊
Nigel, once a Category 1 hurricane, transformed into a post-tropical cyclone as it ventured deeper into the vast Atlantic Ocean. Here are three takeaways about Tropical Storm Nigel on the day we recorded it (22 September):
1️⃣ Nigel's Winds: With maximum sustained winds of 70 miles per hour on Friday morning, Nigel was still packing a punch. Hurricanes boast winds of 74 mph or higher, so it was just shy of hurricane force.
2️⃣ Nigel was located approximately 640 miles north-northwest of the Azores, a stunning Portuguese archipelago in the heart of the Atlantic. This post-tropical cyclone was on the move, heading northeast at a brisk 37 mph! 🚀

🇹🇷 Exploring Turkey's Heart and Capital: Ankara 🏛️
Ankara, nestled in the heart of Anatolia, boasts a bustling 5.1 million residents and a province that swells to 5.7 million. It's not just Turkey's
second-largest city; it's the largest by urban area (2,767 km2), located around 125 miles south of the Black Sea. 🌆
Ankara isn't just about politics and governance; it's a hub of creativity and commerce. From carpets to leather goods, wine to farm implements, and even cement production – this city has it all. 🏭
But that's not all! Ankara is also a vital market and processing centre for mohair and the delicious fruits and wheat cultivated in its surrounding regions. 🌾
This city beautifully balances its rich history with modernity. The old quarter centred around ancient citadel ruins, features narrow, winding streets and quaint buildings. In contrast, the new city, meticulously planned since 1928, is a spacious wonderland. Think broad boulevards, libraries, museums, embassies, government buildings, chic boutiques, and luxury hotels. 🏙️

The intense colour, textures and beauty of Namib Naukluft National Park, Africa, from the perspective of space. 🏜️
From space, Namib Naukluft National Park in Africa is a mesmerizing canvas of contrasts and extremes. It's a land where rock meets flowing sand, rugged mountains meet lapping waters, and ephemeral rivers carve through canyons unpredictably.
In the scorching daytime heat, mirages transform the landscape into a shimmering silver sea, while mornings and late afternoons adorn the dunes with dramatic hues and shadows, making it a photographer's (on Earth) paradise. Relentless wind erases footprints on the dunes as quickly as they appear. 🌅
Covering nearly 50,000 km², Namib-Naukluft Park shelters some of Namibia's most diverse ecosystems. This vast sanctuary hosts iconic African wildlife, from the majestic black rhino, reintroduced to celebrate the park's centenary, to graceful giraffes, gemsbok, and springbok. Predators like cheetahs, leopards, and hyenas also find refuge within its boundaries. 🐆

Namib-Naukluft National Park from space! 🏜️ This ecological gem nestled within the world's oldest desert, the Namib Desert, boasts the tallest sand dunes on the planet, reaching up to a staggering 980 feet (300 meters) in height. 🌅
Established in 1907 and continuously expanding, this park is a testament to the ever-changing landscapes of the Namibian coastline. It's not just the dunes that shift over time; even shipwrecks like the Eduard Bohlen find themselves relocated inland, 1214 feet from their original resting place due to coastal changes. 🚢
Dynamic coastal spits stretch south to north along the Namib Desert coast, shaped by the relentless forces of wind and currents. These sandy ridges are forever changing and evolving. 🌊

Derna, Libya, filmed from space.
In the early hours of September 11, the residents of Derna faced a catastrophe as Storm Daniel unleashed its fury - two dams upstream near the majestic Jebel Akhdar (the Green Mountain) could not hold back the relentless rain surge.
The result? A seven-meter tsunami-like wave surged down Wadi Derna, crashing through the city and sweeping entire suburbs to the sea. The death toll from floods has reached 11,300 in Libya's coastal city of Derna, with 10,100 missing.

Can you spot Hawaii amongst the vastness of the Ocean? 🏝️🌊
Last week on the island, Kilauea, one of the world's most active volcanoes, roared back to life after a two-month hiatus 🌋.
While we captured a calm scene from space, overnight webcam views revealed the mesmerizing incandescence across the eruption area as the lava that erupted over the past week continues to cool, and gases are released downwind of Kilauea. 🌫️
Seismic activity associated with fluid movement in the summit region has decreased significantly. When Kilauea, Hawaii's second-largest volcano, erupted from September 2021 to December 2021, it left an indelible mark on the island.

The scene our satellite captured as it filmed between Hurricane Lee and Tropical Storm Margot churning over the Atlantic. 🌪️🌊
Hurricane Lee, born from a tropical depression on September 5th between Africa and South America, wasted no time. Within hours, it transformed into Tropical Storm Lee, and by September 6th, it had ascended to hurricane status east of the northern Leeward Islands. 🌀
Lee wasn't done yet—on September 8th, it underwent explosive intensification, unleashing winds of up to 165 mph, earning its fearsome Category 5 title. But nature's mood swings prevailed, and by September 10th, Lee was humbled, becoming a Category 2 storm.
But here's the twist—just as we thought Lee was settling down, it roared back to life, reclaiming its Category 3 strength.
Meanwhile, a new player entered the scene. On September 7th, west of the Cape Verde Islands, Tropical Storm Margot was born, graduating to hurricane aspirations by September 11th, all while gracefully pirouetting northward across the vast Atlantic expanse, never posing a threat to land.
