Today we are honored to celebrate one of our ocean’s most dedicated warriors, our co-founder Cristina Mittermeier! Even in her youth, when she lived far from the shore, Cristina heard the ocean’s call. She followed its voice and has worked to amplify it ever since– first as a scientist, now as a storyteller. Because of her remarkable ability to draw people in with her imagery, she sparks curiosity and empathy for our ocean and the people intertwined with its health. Her storytelling, activism, leadership, and dedication to change inspire us daily, and we are certain that our ocean is forever fortunate to have her as an ally.
When asked about her birthday wish, Cristina’s answer came as no surprise. She remains steadfast and loyal to her purpose and asks only for further support for the sea. Join us in celebrating Cristina and her endless dedication to our ocean, its inhabitants, and all who depend on its gifts by donating to SeaLegacy on this week’s Giving Tuesday. This year, every contribution to SeaLegacy on Giving Tuesday doubles in size thanks to an anonymous matching donor! Visit the link in our bio to learn more and support.

Resting on the warm sand, you hear a commanding crash of the waves, see the spray ricochet from the tumbling barrel, and witness the rush of the water’s edge as it retreats to begin the cycle again. This powerful rhythm carries on without more than a brief lull– a constant reminder that our ocean is always at work.
From food availability to temperature regulation, climate change mitigation, and beyond, our ocean provides invaluable support to all of Earth’s inhabitants. How could we possibly show our gratitude? #GivingTuesday nears the shore! The @GivingTuesday movement unites the world once a year to encourage humanity to do good, make a change, and support a cause. This Tuesday, November 28th, show your appreciation for the ocean by supporting SeaLegacy!
Every donation helps us amplify our ocean’s voice and advocate for scientifically led solutions! And this year, your impact goes twice as far, as every donation will be matched! Double your impact this #GivingTuesday , and stay tuned for how you can help us reach this year’s goal!

Otters snack on shellfish and use a rock (that they store in their armpit for safekeeping) as a tool to get to the good stuff. But when they feast on sea urchins, they use their teeth and feet. In doing so, the otters allow their ecosystem to flourish because if they were no longer around to devour these spikey settlers, the urchins would overpopulate and overgraze their shared kelp forest ecosystems. Thanks to the sea otter, Pacific kelp forests can continue to provide food and shelter while helping to mitigate climate change!

It’s Manatee Awareness Month!
Florida first declared November the manatee’s month in 2005. Throughout this fall month, when manatees seek out the warmer spring waters, Floridians are reminded to look out for their grazing sea cow neighbors while boating.

They say you are what you eat, but that surely isn’t the case with the crabeater seal. Instead of the animals you might expect this seal to feast on, this curious Antarctic critter relies on one of the region’s most important species– krill!
Krill not only support the estimated 4 million crabeater seal individuals, but they play an essential role in the Antarctic food web as a whole. Krill acts as a food source for almost every species in the region. This week at the 42nd Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR) meeting, we hope to see efforts made to protect krill, to safeguard their populations, and the multitude of other species that rely on them, like the crabeater seal!

Antarctica and the Southern Ocean bear the weight of our ocean’s future with their influence on global atmospheric and water temperatures, nutrient cycling, and food availability. The Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR) has the opportunity to take action now and safeguard our collective future.

Kelp forests, like those found in Patagonia, can store up to 20 times as much carbon per acre than forests on land! Their ability to rapidly sequester and hold onto carbon makes kelp forests a crucial piece in mitigating impacts from climate change.
