Three grounding techniques to try to see if they work for you ⬇️
Grounding is the practice of anchoring ourselves to the present moment or something we can control in order to cope with triggers or difficulties.
5-4-3-2-1
This is a simple exercise many survivors have found to help them de-stress during moments of extreme emotions, dissociations, or flashbacks. It uses each of the five senses to root yourself in the present moment:
Name 5 things you can see.
Name 4 things you can feel.
Name 3 things you can hear.
Name 2 things you can smell.
Name 1 thing you can taste.
Paced breathing
Take a moment to get comfortable and focus on your emotions. Rest a hand on your chest or stomach if it helps you feel calm.
Inhale through your nose, counting to four.
Hold your breath, counting to two.
Exhale through your mouth, counting to six.
Repeat as needed.
Butterfly hug
The butterfly hug—sometimes referred to as the “self-love hug”—is an example of sensory grounding involving touch.
Get in a comfortable position, either sitting or lying down.
Then, cross your arms over your chest and rest the tips of your fingers on your collarbone, shoulders, or arms.
Next, gently tap your arms, alternating sides. As you do so, breathe in and out. Tap for as long as you need to.
When it feels right, rest your hands and let your attention come back to the present moment.

If you’re the only one, we see you and you’re making a difference. But if this lands on your fyp and you haven’t joined this cause yet? It’s time. 1 in 5 children is sexually abused before the age of 18. There’s no time to waste.

One activity we offer at the Saprea retreat is drumming. Did you know drumming can help release pent up trauma and tension in the body?
"[The drum circle] was another thing I was skeptical about—but I went in open minded and I loved it. I could feel myself start to feel again, if that makes sense. Don’t get me wrong, I stunk it up! Good thing nothing important depended on me doing it well. But I learned a lot about how rhythm affects the body. I am continuing the work to find mine." -Rebecca, Survivor

We often hear that parents know they need to talk to their children about boundaries and consent, but they’re not sure how or when. We recommend getting started on these topics from an early age. Try to choose a low-stakes moment to have a conversation—maybe while folding laundry together, cooking dinner, or doing a craft—and then bring up the topic casually and directly. In this video, we provide a sample script for how that conversation might go. Visit saprea.org for more resources.

“The Saprea Retreat gave me hope for a brighter future. For the first time it felt safe to be ‘seen’ because the staff and attendees genuinely cared for and understood my hurting soul… my story mattered, my brokenness mattered, and my desire to make positive change was validated.” —Stacey, Survivor

While a parent may have the biggest influence on a child’s life when it comes to educating about healthy sexual development and reducing the risk of sexual abuse, many adults also play an impactful role—especially teachers. They have the potential to be an important safety net for kids who are at high risk for sexual abuse at home.

Because consent and boundaries go hand-in-hand, teaching consent can begin at a young age. As children practice giving respect, reading body language to understand mutual interest, and honoring another person’s “no,” they will understand that consent happens in situations that have nothing to do with sex.

Emotions are not a bad thing; in fact, it’s part of what makes us human. The opportunity you have as a parent is to show your child how to experience those feelings without letting the emotion control your response. Emotion management is a critical part of preventing sexual abuse.
Impulsive behaviors may be the result of a lack of emotion management. While it’s difficult to identify the exact reasons someone chooses to engage in sexually abusive behavior, there is an indication that, in some instances, it is impulsive. As you practice emotional regulation and demonstrate that example to your children, their ability to manage their own emotional responses increases, reducing the likelihood that they will engage in harmful impulsive behaviors, including sexually harming someone else.
