#WhaleTalk ๐ Our campaign for 2023. โข During the coming months, we aim to increase awareness of the variety of marine mammals in our waters and highlight the importance of monitoring and studying these amazing creatures.
Using specialised techniques, such as passive acoustic monitoring, our scientists can record underwater sounds to learn about marine mammal population sizes, migrations and behaviours. This knowledge helps us to inform conservation efforts, government policy and industries such as renewables, fishing and shipping.
Throughout this week, we have exciting news to share, so be sure to visit our campaign page www.sams.ac.uk/whaletalk and follow #WhaleTalk .

You can specialise in #Arctic studies in 3rd year of our BSc #MarineScience @UHI programme. Arctic students have the opportunity to spend parts or all of third year living and studying in the High Arctic at the University Centre in #Svalbard where they learn about how to conduct Arctic research on ships, sea ice, glaciers and land. Epic.
We ๐ #Algae and look after over 3,000 strains of algae and protozoa here at SAMS. Some have been frozen for over 50 years!
In this video, SAMS scientist Naomi Thomas who works in Culture Collection of Algae and Protozoa (CCAP), lifts a cryo stat containing 100s of small vials of #microalgae out of liquid #nitrogen that have been cryopreserved. Tanks are filled twice a month to maintain constant temperature and to make sure nothing starts warming up. To revive a certain strain, we take it out the tank and defrost it in a water bath at 40C and then place into fresh media. The algae bounce back within 2-6 weeks and are ready to go.

Cool lab time - โPolar Seasโ is a selective module @UHI marine science undergraduates can choose in their final year and includes a cool ice lab session. Students learn about salt balances in polar regions, in this case a simplification of how much salt content is found in each layer of the surface ocean: the brine (a salty solution on top of the ice), the ice itself and underlying water.
Using volumes and salinities, students are able to calculate how closely the overall salt content they measure matches the actual content of their "ice box". This is an opportunity to learn how to use refractometers to measure salinity and also visualise brine channels in the ice using ink. Looking at the underside of an ice cube also shows clearly how ice grows in beautiful platelets. Pretty cool right?
