As leaders, we can be overly focused on our next achievement, our next goal, our next assignment. But I’ve learned that it’s more important to lift others as we climb. Lifting others is the foundation for creating more inclusive workplaces that offer belonging and safety. And true justice for all.

I often hear, “I don’t know what my peer is talking about. I’ve always felt like I belonged at my workplace.” This perspective can be invalidating and harmful to those who have experienced bias at work (or in life!). Remember that what feels welcoming to you may feel different to folks of other identities, particularly underestimated ones. Please listen and learn with empathy, and work through the discomfort if someone is sharing an experience that doesn’t match yours.
