Jazz Rock Serenade
When l lived in NYC in the 90s l watched almost every performance of NY City Ballet by buying the cheapest standing room tickets in the nosebleed area of the theater then finding an empty seat when the lights went down. Serenade was one of my favorite Balanchine ballets. He made it in 1935 to celebrate coming to America. When the curtain rose and all the dancers in blue light stood still in parallel position with their right arms raised to an invisible moon, you could hear the audience gasp. I loved seeing Darci Kistler dance. We called her the Queen.
So this is the beginning of the Tchaikovsky piece of music. In Balanchine’s version of Serenade, in these first 20 seconds, there is no movement.
Here’s my jazz rock version of those same 20 seconds.

Here’s a training loop l use to train my jazz rock dance. It starts with a twister (Jo Jo La Fleur) then heel step to slide forward. In tap they call this move “trenches.” The Nicolas Brothers used them a lot…
I often make training loops using this cross X to train multiple directions and practice on both the left and right side without resetting a combo. I also think it’s important to train not always facing front.
I chose Herbie Hancock’s Rockit because the tempo’s not too fast… and you can play with the scratches Enjoy!!

Here’s a breakdown of the combo l did yesterday… it’s really just one 8 count phrase that loops to the other side. The 8 counts contain two twisters (Jo Jo La Fleur in jazz rock and toe taps in other styles) that go in opposite directions… then the setup for the first twister is a twist… that’s what makes it look cool.
The phrase starts with the knee up the goes into JBs (heel toe heel). Have fun and create your own twisting variations!!

I play around with combos when l walk around the city. The obstacles are really helpful. You can use this with any combo you like. I just gave a 4 count combo as an example.
1. Stairs > plyometric strength or popping energy
2. Lines > precision
3. Increase line distance > propulsion forward and back
4. Ledge > improve balance
5. Gravel > proprioceptive awareness

Twister Footwork Combo - 1 Min Dance Tutorial
When l first started learning jazz rock, the twisting move known as Jo Jo La Fleur, named after an elegant club dancer from Paris in the 80s was one of my favorites. l had such a hard time learning jazz rock because l focused too much on the steps. Honestly sometimes it’s just better to play the music and play with beats while you groove n twist…
There is an overriding logic to the moves. The toe heel taps sync with the hip twists and you have to maintain a bounce like in lindy hop.
The basic elements in this combo are
1) essuie glace (translation: windshield wiper, which is like fall off the log in lindy hop or the sidewalk In house dance)
2) Jo Jo La Fleur (called the Twister in house or toe taps in other footwork styles)
3) Toe heel toe twist…
In this phrase, the accent is on 1, 3, 5, 8 and 1. Hope that helps.

Fun 6 Count Footwork Combo 👟
So you start really simple like with a grapevine move (cross front cross back)… THEN you just add a foot drag, a foot toggle (we do these a lot in jam skating…) and a few more slides and drags and it’s really fun because you can play with the edges of your feet…
Here l gave some counts to the 6 count phrase but you can change it up however you like…
Ways to change it up…
1. Drag your feet out longer
2. Hold any of the beats
3. Add a turn
4. Play with the edges of your feet
5. Twist more somewhere and see where it leads
6. Play with weight shifts and falling
7. Do the other side (always good to train)

I think of this move as a variation of the heel toe crab walk. I see people teaching this move by showing the left and right foot separated then putting the two together. I find that approach really confusing because then you’re just focusing on the steps. If you learn the move as a series of weight shifts, l think it’s much more practical. I show the move in tap shoes for clarity. I think of four sounds, and the feet pivot as the weight shifts. That’s what makes it look cool (imho).
I really feel like when l started footwork dance l focused way too much on the steps and not enough on the twists and weight shifts. As my favorite freestyle slalom skater Naomi Griggs says… it’s all about the art of falling. Workin on it!!
