Low Blood Sugars and diabetes! Listen to learn what factors can increase a person’s risk of low blood sugar.
This table is part of the American Diabetes Association Standard of Care Guidelines which is an excellent resource listing factors that increase low blood sugar, aka hypoglycemia, risk.
Please take the time to listen and review what is listed so that you can be better informed and discuss with your trusted health care team whether or not any of these factors apply to you.
By being informed and understanding any potential risk, you can be best equipped to avoid hypoglycemia!
Other important factors from the table to highlight that were not discussed in the video:
*Frailty and older age. Frailty may be paired with decreased appetite or decreased ability to respond to a low blood sugar when it happens. If this is the case and ESPECIALLY if the person lives alone, adjustment of medicines are needed to avoid hypoglycemia.
* Hypoglycemia unawareness. This is when a person has had low blood sugars so often, that the body becomes used to low blood sugars and no longer alarms the person with symptoms when it happens. This is very dangerous and can even be fatal.

What does that A1c percentage even mean?!
Watch to learn the correlation between daily blood sugar numbers and A1c results!
As some of you know, a blood test called the A1c, is one of the ways we can screen for diabetes and track diabetes control.
Once someone has diabetes, a frequent A1c target is <7%, since below this threshold several studies have shown prevention of microvascular and macrovascular complications.
But instead of waiting every 3 months to know if you are reaching the target, knowing that an A1c of 7% is equivalent to an average blood sugar of 154mg/dL, if you aim to keep blood sugars consistently <150mg/dL on a daily basis, you can then rest assured that A1c will be <7%, if that is your A1c target!
This is also how some medical professionals can look at blood sugar logs and continuous glucose monitor, or CGM data and by looking at the numbers and their averages, can estimate what the A1c will likely be when a person goes to have their blood drawn!
Now instead of wondering if your next A1c will be at goal, you will be able to predict what it will be based on your daily blood sugar trends!

Goal-setting in diabetes is a recommended part of each person's care plan. 💯
Ideally, your medical team goes over goal-setting with you at the time of your visit and revisits these goals at future visits.
3 important goals to start with:
1) Blood sugar goals and how it will be measured
2) Blood pressure goals
3) Diabetes self-management goals
So.....
What goals has your medical team helped you set?
What other goals do you have, in addition to these?? 👇
