Since I was 15, I’ve been stuck in a cycle of food restriction and obsessive behavior that I finally decided to confront head on this past year. My new album “Hold That Spirit” has a couple songs where I open up about it, and I’m so ready to finally talk about this all too common disorder. And hopefully bring support to others who struggle. I asked my Mom, “what was your relationship to joy growing up?” And she answered, “I don’t remember ever focusing on the word joy or happiness - it was never a concept of conversation. We were more focused on working to sustain our life.” After emigrating from Japan to the US, my mom saw her parents having to work multiple jobs like sewing pillowcases, working at a grocery store, in addition to going to school, to build their lives in this new country. My mom’s family fought hard for a beautiful and joyous life in America, but it was not always easy or joyous - especially in the beginning. I try never to take for granted any joy I experience, because every smile I experience is an echo of the resilience of my grandparents.
I’m so excited to release my new song “Joy Revolution” during AAPI heritage month alongside the amazing @MILCK ! We all deserve radical, unapologetic, and unconditional joy! Our immigrant ancestors fought hard for our laughter, and joy.
