July 26, 2023, marks the 33rd anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
The ADA is a civil rights law that affirms and protects the rights of people with disabilities to participate in public life. It forbids discrimination on the basis of disability in the areas of employment, government services, public accommodations, access to transportation, and communications. Under the ADA, employers are also required to make reasonable accommodations for applicants or employees with a disability.
Although the ADA has made significant strides toward equality for people with disabilities in public life, there’s still a long way to go. People with disabilities are twice as likely to live in poverty and four times more likely to experience homelessness. They experience higher rates of unemployment, and those who are employed earn less than workers who do not have a disability. They also face poorer health outcomes and barriers in access to healthcare.
In honor of its 33rd birthday, RAM reflects on this landmark law, what the law means for the one in four Americans living with a disability, and the continued work that still needs to be done to ensure full inclusion and participation for all people with disabilities.

"Change never happens at the pace we think it should.
It happens over years of people joining together, strategizing, sharing, and pulling all the levers they possibly can." - Judith Heumann (1947-2023) May her memory be a blessing

4 Self-talk shifts for folks with chronic pain:
"It will hurt too much" --> "I can try and if it hurts too much, I can adapt or stop."
"I'll never feel better" --> "I'm feeling rough but I know I can take care of myself"
"My body is failing me" --> "I should treat my body with more kindness"
"I'm worthless because I can't do X,Y,Z" --> "My pain & abilities do not define my worth"
