Crohy Head and its Sea Arch aka The Briste (Na Bristí) as well as remains of Crohy soapstone mines, are a certain place to add to your Wild Atlantic Way bucket list.

The ruins of the Crohy soapstone mining works date back to 1893 when they were built by the North of Ireland Mineral Company. Before it, first recorded workings happened as far as 1861.

Soapstone or Steatite is largely composed of the mineral talc which in turn contains high amounts of magnesium. Talc is very versatile and there are tens or even hundreds of uses for it industrially. It was mined, dried and crushed here.
The mines were worked intermittently until 1947.

The Briste aka Crohy Head Sea Arch, is a 25 metre high sea arch which name refers to its similarity to a pair of trousers or breeches (in Irish: Na Bristí). It is made from quartzite, which was once a sand on an ancient shore (more than 600 million years ago) and which was later changed due to the intense pressure from two continental plates colliding.

The Briste is now a popular attraction for experienced rock climbers and photographers.

Caution: The steep descent to the Briste requires some climbing as well as loose rock and is not suitable for those who are inexperienced with such terrain. When we were there, we were lucky to have a climbing rope attached to one of the stones that someone left there, so you might be lucky too.

Most of the mine works are collapsed or inaccessible. Do not enter any of the remaining mines as they are unstable.
