Nathan Studio's "Monster" Red-Carpet Premiere
Monster, a Japanese drama by 2018 Cannes Palme d'Or awardee (Shoplifters) Hirokazu Kore-eda, had its first Southeast Asian premiere last night, October 3, at the SM Megamall. Monster—which brought home the Queer Palm and Best Screenplay award at the 2023 Cannes International Film Festival—is the first foreign film that Nathan Studios (producer of Cattleya Killer and Topakk) is bringing to the Philippines. Initially, it's about a mother seeking justice for her son who lied about being bullied by his teacher. But as the story unfolds, it becomes a sad tale of friendship between two lonely boys who are slowly and painfully coming to terms about their identities. According to the producers, Nathan Studios' Sylvia Sanchez and Ria Atayde, along with Lorna Tolentino (who belatedly joined the distribution project), Monster was hit at Cannes. They got curious about it, watched it, and later sought the people behind it to state their intention of buying the rights to distribute the film in the Philippines. So, here we are. Monster opens in cinemas nationwide on October 11.
