📍 FROM NYC: Yesterday, September 17th, our staff reporter Alexis Young covered the March to #EndFossilFuels where 75K people demanded @Potus break free from fossil fuels and build a just and safe future.
Hear some of the most thought provoking clips from the interviews she gathered including: Marah Rockhold, originally from the Cayuse Nation, @abre_conner from @Naacp, @thesustainableboheme, and @goldmanprize winner, Diane Wilson.
Fossil fuel pollution impacts us all - and Indigenous, Black, communities with low incomes and communities of color disproportionately bear the brunt of the harm, with deadly consequences like asthma and cancer.
Stay tuned for more interviews from #climateweek covering this important topic.

Sixty years ago, Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his monumental "I have a dream" speech at the March on Washington. Now, six decades later, the fight for racial, economic, and environmental justice continues. In the aftermath of yet another petrochemical plant fire in Louisiana's Cancer Alley, groups like Rise St. James, The Descendants Project, and Concerned Citizens of St. John persist in the struggle against environmental racism.
We want to know: What is your dream?"

From Indigenous Americans seeking refuge from the colonial frontier, to enslaved African people seeking freedom from bondage-Wetlands have always served not only as an ecosystem for resistance but also climate resilience. Wetlands are nature-based solution constructed and maintained by nature itself for biodiversity, carbon sequestration, and protection from storm surges.
In a recent interview with People Over Plastic Roishetta Shilbey-Ozane of the Vessel Project talks about the ancestral connections of Black southerns and indigenous communities to wetlands. In Louisianas Cancer alley, where petrochemical industries are disproportionately polluting Black and Brown communities, Big Oil Companies like Exxon and CF industries are pouring money into controversial carbon capture programs like "wetlands restoration" in an attempt to "decarbonize the global economy" CF Industries is the largest industrial carbon emitter in Louisiana, releasing over 10 million metric tons a year.
Our future depends on more than tech based solutions to petrochemical pollution and the climate crisis. We need industries that stop extraction and sacrifice of both people and planet for profit. Carbon capture programs only benefit fossil fuel companies. Nature holds the ancestral knowledge we need to to create truly vibrant and regenerative systems.

As thousands evacuate almost apocalyptic wildfires in Maui, Hawaii has declared a state of major disaster and President Biden has approved sending federal aid. The wildfire caused by Hurricane Dora hundreds of miles away is yet another example of the ever-growing needs and demands for climate justice.

Growing up, Shamyra Lavigne thought she lived in a paradise. Her home in St. James Parish, Louisiana was nestled between the Mississippi River and lush sugar cane fields. When reflecting back on those times, Lavigne, who works with the faith-based environmental justice organization Rise St. James, described it as a life of privilege.
It wasn’t until she was older that she began to notice details about her surroundings that didn’t seem right.

The EPA has closed the Civil Rights investigation that would have examined environmental racism in predominantly Black parishes in Louisiana. Leaders in the environmental justice movement are extremely disappointed but not surprised. Dr. Joy Banner is the co-founder of the The Descendants Project which advocates for Louisiana's Black descendant community and demands action that supports their total wellbeing. That wellbeing includes protecting the community from plastic and petrochemical industries and other big polluters that have tried for years to put up stakes there.
As Dr. Banner explains here, too often the lives and needs of Black, Brown and low-income people are ignored in favor of economic development. This is is an equity Dr.
Banner would like to see end once and for all.

A novel skills-training program in New Orleans, Louisiana is helping build the next green infrastructure workforce. @LAGreenCorps has attracted well over 1200 students and that includes 22 year-old
Destiny Barnes.
Barnes has already earned a number of certificates and says she hopes to complete more so she can work in a variety of different green sector jobs. That includes green construction, infrastructure and conservation. Not only does Barnes say she will be better equipped to enter these job sectors, as a woman, she's breaking barriers in traditionally male-dominated industries.
