Saturday, September 30th is the third annual National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. The day is meant to honour the lost children and Survivors of residential schools, their families and communities. While this is an important moment to grieve and reflect — it’s equally important to recognize that although governments’ have committed to reconciliation — their policies continue to disproportionately harm Indigenous peoples, especially Indigenous women, girls and 2SLGBTQA+ peoples.
Provincial and federal governments continue to undermine the rights of Indigenous peoples, like foregoing provision of basic rights and services like clean drinking water to Indigenous communities, refusing to search landfills for murdered Indigenous women and girls, and sending militarized police into unceded Indigenous territory to violently remove air, water, and land defenders in the name of resource extraction.
Indigenous people have been fighting against injustice since the first settlers landed on Turtle Island. It is our duty to fight alongside them against capitalist and colonialist structures. OPSEU/SEFPO stands in solidarity with Indigenous peoples everywhere and echoes their calls for justice and self-determination.
