Polar gigantism tends to occur with marine invertebrates. At the poles where the water is much colder, creatures tend to be larger than their relatives living closer to the equator. #seaspider #seaspiders #arachnophobia #creepycrawly #antarctica #seafloor #underwater #seacreatures #creepycreature #aliensonearth #facehugger #marineinvertebrates
📍 OceanX is on mission in the United Arab Emirates, a vibrant ocean region with unique underwater ecosystems. Follow along as we explore deep-sea coral reefs, microbes with incredible adaptations, and elusive marine mammals.

On our latest expedition, we went free diving with devil rays and explored deep sea coral gardens in our submersibles, with a science team from the Okeanos Institute at the University of the Azores. Here’s a glimpse at some of the action!
The goal of this expedition was to uncover new insights about the fascinating life of seamounts. These underwater mountains are biodiversity hotspots. They’re a critical habitat for tons of species, including sharks, rays, and deep sea corals. This research will shed new light on how these complex ecosystems function, from the deep sea to the surface.

Believe it or not, these are just ordinary dolphins! So why are they glowing blue?
This is an incredible display of bioluminescence from dinoflagellates, which are microscopic phytoplankton. Just one would be incredibly difficult to see, but some marine conditions can cause the phytoplankton to bloom and have a large population explosion in a concentrated area for a temporary amount of time.
With so many dinoflagellates in one area, they can create mesmerizing blue streaks in the ocean when they are agitated by the waves crashing, boats moving, or dolphins swimming. It’s theorized that the dinoflagellates glow as a defense mechanism against predators.
