After painting for 5 hours, all I could see was color.
Acrylic gouache color studies taught at the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) by Bill Miller.
Our first lesson included learning about the color wheel and making paintings of monochromatic, analagous, and complementary hues.

Assignment: Make an etching of an apple! I reflected on fall in Providence. Edgar Allen Poe once wrote that this season was “dull, dark, and soundless.”

On being Asian American: a Political History
Galvanized by identity-based organizing from the Black Power Movement, the American Indian Movement, the Brown Berets and more, student organizers in the 1970’s built power through the term “Asian American”. These identity-based movements fought for social services, protested war, and created ethnic studies departments.
As with all things under capitalism, original intentions get subsumed in favor of consumability. Today, Asian American is more often used a marketing tactic instead of a way to fight for equal rights across all marginalized races… in a country built on stolen land using stolen labor… waging war across the globe.
This clip was recorded at the Stanford University Listen To The Silence Conference @stanfordxlts held in May 2023. Moderated by Biak Tha Hlawn @hlawnhlawnn, I shared the stage with panelists Arshia Haq @discostan, Chriz Naing @chriz9ine, and Dr. Stephen Murphy-Shigematsu.

Art x Activism: discussing the relationship between negative space and disability justice.
This clip was recorded at the Stanford University Listen To The Silence conference held in May 2023. Moderated by Biak Tha Hlawn, I shared the stage with panelists Arshia Haq, Chriz Naing, and Dr. Stephen Murphy-Shigematsu.
In this panel, I named a few Bay Area asian organizers who shaped the disability justice movement: Leah Lakshmi Piepzna-Samarasinha, Mia Mingus, and Stacey Milbern.
Holding my copy of “Care Work: Dreaming Disability Justice” by Piepzna-Samarasinha, I read Patty Berne’s definition of disability justice: “A Disability Justice framework understands that all bodies are unique and essential, that all bodies have strengths and needs that must be met… Disabled people of the global majority—black and brown people—share common ground confronting and subverting colonial powers in our struggle for life and justice.”
In art and in activism, negative space (an area/time of rest, emptiness, repose) is critical to creating impactful art and movements. We need rest just as much as we need action.

Replying to @soap 4 reasons why i chose RISD: (1) focus of program, (2) campus, (3) students in program, and (4) financial aid. Everyone’s decision will be unique to them. I hope this helps!!
