Worship is a great way to begin Get to Know Your Synod Day. The North Carolina Synod staff get to spend the day sharing with and getting to know some of the rostered ministers newest to the synod. Some are in their first call, others have moved to take calls in the NC Synod, and still others are retired rostered ministers new to the area. We give thanks for their ministry as we spend time together today.

Today, October 4 is World Animal Day, also known as the Feast Day of St. Francis of Assisi. St. Born in 1182, St. Francis of Assisi was a friar — a kind of monk who lived not in a monastery but rather among the poor out in the world. He is now considered the patron saint of animals and the natural world.

In honor of St. Francis and our furry, feathery, and scaly friends, many congregations gather for a blessing of the animals. Is there a Blessing of the Animals in your community? Tag a friend to invite them!

As we gathered at Synod Assembly this past June, the North Carolina Synod witnessed the movement of God among us as we welcomed Comunidad Amada de Cristo—Christ's Beloved Community (CBC)—Winston-Salem, as a new congregation of the ELCA and the NC Synod.

CBC is an ecumenical (Lutheran/Episcopal) and bilingual (Spanish/English) ministry that serves as a food distribution hub for hundreds of people in that community of South Winston-Salem. So far in 2023, they have welcomed over 40 confirmands, nine First Communion students, and 60 new members.

This video captures just peice of the vibrant ministry of this commuity. Special thanks to Father Javier Arias, the saints of Christ's Beloved Community, and Jason Chesnut (filmmaker, ANKOSfilms) for sharing their gifts with the synod.

POV: It’s the beginning of a new school year.

Congregations across the synod kick off the new school year in a number of ways, from holding blessing of the backpacks to school supply drives for local organizations like Communities in Schools.

Dear God, We ask for a blessing on every student, teacher, faculty member, and parent. We ask that you protect them, help them discover the gifts you have given them, and help them nurture respectful relationships with one another guided by the love and grace modeled by Jesus Christ. Amen.

TikTok Tell It! Youth Video Contest 1st Place Winner: St. John’s, Salisbury

St. John’s youth shares about their “homie,” Jesus. Jesus’s teachings draw us in and give us examples of unending love. Even after one of Jesus’s own followers betrayed him, Jesus still bore the weight of the sin of all humanity. Jesus is for us, even at the cost of his life. Love ultimately wins. (Matthew 20, 26-28)

Youth groups, grades 6-12, were tasked to tell a Bible story in a creative way. Aside from the parameters of TikTok video in two minutes or less, the youth were given complete creative agency—and they did not disappoint. St. John’s Lutheran Church youth group in Salisbury, NC is this year’s first-place winner with “The Passion Story." The contest is facilitated and sponsored by the NC Synod Engage the Bible Ministry Team.

TikTok Tell It! Youth Video Contest 2nd Place Winner: Christ the King, Cary

No one is too busy, too important, too rich, too ANYTHING to NOT think of others. Christ the King’s youth share the Good Samaritan story, a classic example of doing the right thing even when it's not required of you. No matter how many times you've heard the parable, the message never gets old and continues to be relevant in everyday life.

Mt. Hermon’s youth share their creative take on Noah’s Ark with a reminder to listen to God and don’t be aloof to the Scripture. Someone in the youth group “floated” the idea of a newscast with Noah about the flood out there and the rest of the youth jumped on board!
