Should we look at art from a distance or zoom in and inspect it more closely?
There is beauty in both.
It all starts with the big picture.
When creating a composition for an artwork, the first thing I think about is readability. Even from a far, it should be clear what’s in the image.
So it makes sense that art should be looked at from a distance only?
Well… No.
Art is often not meant to be observed up close. I mean, I compose my images so that everything “flows” and “functions” in this one controlled structure I’m creating. And that can only fully work when observed as a whole.
But I believe there can be more to a piece than just that.
Even if there aren't many details. The brushwork, the subtle shifts in color or value, the texture. All that can be interesting to study up close. Even trivialities like varying thickness of applied paint can catch your eye.

We artists are strange creatures.
We aren’t afraid of putting the most vulnerable parts of ourselves into our art, yet we are afraid of talking about our art.
We are afraid of being seen as naive, immature, inexperienced, foolish, weak or even whiny.
While I think that the meaning of an artwork should be up to the viewer, the artist's job isn’t done when the piece is done.
We should tell the viewers what we wanted to say and what our intentions were with our paintings. The meaning of the artwork shouldn’t be dictated, but context should be provided. Then it is up to them to decide for themselves. Chances are, they will connect with our art even more!
To verbalize something so meaningful and so personal to strangers takes courage. And to verbalize it well and cohesively takes time. You have to practice and be actively “stepping into that fire” to get used to it and feel comfortable doing it.
Next time someone stops by your table at a convention and shows interest, strike up a conversation and explain what you do and why you do it. Trust me, there are people who care about what you have to say and will genuinely find it fascinating.
That is my opinion, anyway! And this topic would make a nice 100-page essay. 🤣 What do you think?
