- Pause & see what safe birth looks like đŸ‘€âžïž For centuries Black Midwives and doulas have played a critical role in improving the outcomes of Mothers, babies, families, and communities. With the unfortunate recent stats that were released this month we need visual reminders or for some awakening that safe maternal spaces exist within our community. The maternal mortality rate hit its highest levels since 1965 💔. We must take a look at our options, choices, decisions, and the necessary healing the we must do together. If you’re pregnant, this is your sign to hire a birth team that’s safe, culturally competent, and know how to take care of Black families. Over here we pray, meditate, laugh, cry, and heal together. You deserve NOTHING less than that! ✹If you’re in Alabama & interested in a birth team that specializes in taking care of US, click the link in bio to schedule your consultation with me. đŸ“ČSave & share this post with your friends that want a safe & peaceful birth www.crownofglorybirth.com created by Nadia G with Tollan Kim's Aesthetic

*How Cristina adjusted her Crown of Glory* “First doula experience, 2nd pregnancy. I don’t even know where to begin
we had a lot of unexpected situations we were faced in our pregnancy. Started in one city/state close to Nadia, and she stuck with us despite a move across the country. Drove all the way out to Chapel Hill to help us. Not only did she provide phenomenal support during my 36 hours of a TOLAC (trial of labor) but she advocated for me when I was starting to get anxious from constant changing of staff in my L&D floor. Preparing us for another singleton pregnancy that we ended up learning was a multiple, losing one of the twins while knowing I would still have to deliver him
her emotional, spiritual and physical support was unmatched. She photographed our journey for my family and I to be able to look back on and that was such a pleasant and unexpected surprise. We laughed, talked and cried together in the time and Nadia helped teach me the extreme importance of advocating for myself but also how powerful it can be when you choose who is in your support circle in such a life-changing experience. Although I didn’t get to have the VBAC and delivery experience we had discussed in the early stages, Nadia helped me get to achieve one of my biggest goals: to labor NATURALLY for 36 hours and empower me. I wouldn’t change that for anything, I had a peaceful pregnancy despite all of the scary and unexpected obstacles we met on the way. I attribute a lot of that to Nadia’s guidance.” đŸ’œđŸ™đŸŸ

How many women do you know who’ve had “emergency” c-sections to “save”them/their baby?

I bet it’s a lotđŸ˜©đŸ˜€.

How many of those Moms were induced because they went past their due date/their Dr. was going on vacay/were carrying a “big” baby
?

How many of those women were given Pitocin and an IV and were confined to bed with a continuous electronic fetal monitor around their belly?

How many of those women were told their pelvis was too small/they weren’t dilating fast enough/their cervix was swollen (because their provider performed too many vaginal exams)?

True emergencies do happen in birth, but without constant interventions, they’re a whole lot less likely.

Most “emergency” c-sections aren’t actual emergencies, and they’re caused by interventions that a woman didn’t even need. But calling it an emergency makes you feel it was necessary, like they saved you, even if they were the ones to cause the problem in the first place.

Learning how to avoid unnecessary interventions that can lead to complications in labor is essential! Knowing how to make the right decisions for you and your baby are LIFE SAVING (you can save your own life) by keeping your power.

11-10-22 I was blessed to witness the birth of THREE baby girls đŸ‘§đŸŸ 💜!

The 1st birth was a Gentle cesarean, also called family centered cesarean, is a pretty wonderful practice. If your cesarean birth is not urgent, these is an awesome conversation to have with your provider prenatally.

There’s no hard and fast definition of what a gentle cesarean is - but essentially, it involves different considerations IN the OR that try to:
- Respect the physiology of childbirth
- Respect the emotional event that birth is
- Values the connection between family members and support people
- Give the parent(s) decision making power back

Some things to consider:
1. Control over your atmosphere. Ask who can be with (including a doula or a photographer). Ask for some music you’ve chosen to be played. Ask that someone else can come in and be with you if your partner and babe need to leave for any reason.
2. Cords and leads do not have to be in the middle of you chest - this interrupts skin to skin!
3. Ask that your arms NOT be strapped down.
4. Ask for a clear drope or ask that the head of the bed be raised and the drape lowered so you can watch your birth.
5. Ask that baby go skin to skin with you.
6. Request that they do not wipe off baby’s vernix during an post-birth assessment.
7. If breastfeeding, ask for latch assistance if baby shows sings IN the OR (and make sure your partner learns how to help as well!).
‱‱‱‱‱
My clients were able to have ALL of the above because they chose a provider & hospital that believes in the connection between family & support people being a part of your birth no matter the location.

Did you get any of the these “gentle” practice during your cesarean?
