Not the “Cinderella fairy godmother” kind of magic from children’s fables, but the kind of magick that is intentional, strategic, and channeled. What happens to a human in the absence of another’s reflection? Does he or she turn into a ghost? If you ask me, when we look into mirrors, we should still see ourselves…
I was reading a quote by John Joseph Powell (from his book, The Secret of Staying in Love) when I had this thought…
The quote says: “It is an absolute human certainty that no one can know his own beauty or perceive a sense of his own worth until it has been reflected back to him in the mirror of another loving, caring human being.”
Perhaps we’re both right. After all, two things can be true at the same time. However, I deeply feel that a human, and especially a woman, must look upon herself in a “mirror” — alone and in the dark — to know who she truly is.
I wrote about the nature of mirrors in my book, A Muse’s Guide to Reinvention. Sometimes, what other people see in us is actually a deficit of what their own soul possesses. Our reflection, in their eyes, often times has very little to do with who WE ARE, and quite largely with who THEY ARE.
And similarly, until one has faced their own “dark night of the soul” (another concept I wrote about in my book), they’ll never be able to sweep away the shadows that hide in the unswept corners of their minds; in the crevices.
It is only after the dark night, and the embrasure of one’s on shadows, that one can stop fearing the “night” (or what holds them back from living their wildest fantasies in the daylight — where everyone can see).
You won’t know what’s on the other side of the mirror until you dare to look. And thus, I would date to say that mirror-gazing is a solo endeavor; not a codependent or partnered one.
