Fossil hunting, success or failure?
We explored a new destination in hopes of finding fossils and ended up surrounded and besieged by stinging nettle. We did find some really cool things on our adventure, but fossils were apparently not one of them.
For reference, graptolites are fossils from colonial marine animals that lived 450 million years ago and are found in slate and sedimentary rocks.
Porphyry is a type of igneous rock with crystals in it that can be found in different colors.
Rocks can be super sneaky. Basalt porphyry ends up looking an awful lot like graptolites in slate except that slate usually keeps it’s hard edges and cleaves on a plane, whereas basalt can be worn smooth by water over time.

Hello, I’m back and I’d like to talk about stormwater and algae!
You might not think little actions make a difference but 20,000 people have adopted storm drains in Minnesota and this collective action has prevented 410,000 pounds of algae from growing in our lakes and rivers! Yes, we’re working with cities on enhaced street sweeping programs too, but power to the people - keep up the great work!

I haven’t given an update on my book since October, but we are nearly done with the editing and on schedule for it to be out next spring! “Exploring the St Croix Valley: Adventures on and off the water.” It’s a guidebook, interspersed with stories and environmental history and I’m working with UMN Press on the project.
There are many great forests to visit here!
