Last weekend, so many people around Australia spoke eloquently and with great wisdom about why we should vote ‘yes’. How lucky that we are at a moment in history where we have the opportunity to hear the voice of the world’s oldest continuous living culture. The most precious duty that we have as a nation must surely be to affirm the voice.

High school in country victoria was brutal for a gay kid like me. Particularly when getting changed for sport and pe classes, I was literally naked - vulnerable and afraid. In retrospect, those other little country kids were afraid too - some of them might also have been struggling with their identity. All that they knew about homosexuality was filtered through fear-mongering campaigns like the grim reaper commercial, or through homophobic rants of some religious leaders - like Fred Nile. I forgive them for hurting me in those change rooms. Though, it took me a long time to not feel the shame that they tried to beat into me. I wrote ‘We are here’ as a message of hope back in time to the little kid that I was: ‘we are here, we are waiting, you are loved’

When I was a kid, the grim reaper commercials terrified me - the message was that the desire that I was starting to feel could lead to death. In the little country town where I grew up there was limited understanding or acceptance of homosexuality - and this ad encouraged the homophobia around me. I felt deeply alone and afraid.
