DIY Custom Built-in Desk for under $150…
One of my favourite DIY’s since we saved pieces destined for the landfill and repurposed them! With school just around the corner figured it was time to start prepping this space for homework!

SETUP: Identical. Amazon was super easy to put together and the battery was already charged.
ATTACHMENTS: Both vacuums come with the exact same attachments, but you can compress the handle on the Amazon vacuum- definite plus.
FLEXIBILITY: Amazon vacuum was much more flexible. Dyson only turns front to back.
POWER: The Dyson still wins for the best suction power...although it is louder. The Amazon vacuum still worked great though.

Here’s how we designed and built this fireplace ourselves, while on a budget!
*𝘐𝘮𝘱𝘰𝘳𝘵𝘢𝘯𝘵 𝘵𝘰 𝘯𝘰𝘵𝘦 𝘸𝘦 𝘥𝘦𝘤𝘪𝘥𝘦𝘥 𝘵𝘰 𝘨𝘰 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘢𝘯 𝘦𝘭𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘳𝘪𝘤 𝘧𝘪𝘳𝘦𝘱𝘭𝘢𝘤𝘦 𝘪𝘯𝘴𝘦𝘳𝘵. 𝘕𝘰𝘵 𝘰𝘯𝘭𝘺 𝘥𝘪𝘥 𝘪𝘵 𝘴𝘢𝘷𝘦 𝘶𝘴 𝘢 𝘵𝘰𝘯 𝘰𝘧 𝘮𝘰𝘯𝘦𝘺, 𝘣𝘶𝘵 𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘭𝘭 𝘨𝘢𝘷𝘦 𝘶𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘰𝘱𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘮𝘪𝘯𝘪𝘮𝘢𝘭 𝘩𝘦𝘢𝘵*
We started out by measuring the space and drawing up a plan. We based our measurements on the position of the light switch, the space required to open the doors to the bedroom and the cold air return on the other side. We didn’t want to block that return so we knew we couldn’t put the fireplace up against the wall.
Then we cleared the space and drew out where we needed to cut into the drywall.
We cut and then had to move a few electrical boxes over to fit our plan. We added in the outlets we needed as well.
Then we added in the insulation, Tuck taped that and stated on the framing.
We built the framing in our garage and brought it up piece by piece. Levelled that a ton of times and then added in the brace pieces for the mantel and tv.
Then we added more drywall to frame out the space for the fireplace insert and the space we designed for the electrical.
We attached bolts for the mantle into the framing. After mudding and taping, the drywall was finished!
We dryfit the fireplace insert and then added corner bead around the edges of the drywall.
Then it was time to prime, paint (I did 3 coats of Limwash paint- I have an entire tutorial on how to apply it! ) and attached the beam.
We plugged in the insert and installed our frame tv.
We finished off the edge of the mantel by cutting some scrap wood and gluing in on. Done!
