In some areas in NSW soft plastics are being collected 👏 go check out the Legends at @recycle.smart , you can book a pickup from your doorstep and in some suburbs it includes soft plastics.
A really good way to reduce soft plastics is to shop at Bulk Food Stores for items like Rice, Cereal, Pasta, Nuts, Seeds, Dried Fruit and much more!
You don’t need to swap everything over, you can do it one at a time, bit by bit.

I’ve mentioned on previous videos that anything small, and generally smaller than business card size can fall through the gaps at the recycling facility and may not/won’t get recycled 🤍
Things like steel and aluminium lids/caps. Small bits of aluminium foil. Cardboard bread tag to name a few.
The best way to recycle the smaller items is to put them inside a bigger item of the same material.
Now that some chocolate bars are in paper wrappers 🍫👏 Best to collect them and put them with other small pieces of cardboard and paper and put them inside a used envelope, paper bag or box.

When I buy any takeaway I look at what packaging it will come in, my Son recently bought me a cake from the bakery, I waited outside and assumed the cake would come in a paper bag, it came in a plastic box instead 😢
When you are getting takeaway look at what they are going to put it in, if it’s an item that can go in a paper bag, on a napkin or straight into your hand then ask for that option.
You can also take a reusable cup, reusable container &, coconut bowl with you when you are out and about and use them as much as you can 🤍

While we have made some progress with plastic bags, I can’t believe we are still using plastic produce bags and many shops are still using plastic bags 🤷♀️
It’s said they take up to 20 years to degrade in landfill. Unfortunately the bags don’t break down completely they become micro-plastics that absorb toxins and continue to pollute the environment.
They can only go in landfill for most of us now that RedCycle isn’t operating 😥

Gather your easter egg wrappers together, scrunch them into the size of a tennis ball 🎾 then pop them in the yellow lidded recycling bin.
Alternatively you can place smaller pieces into an aluminium drink can to contain them before placing it in the recycle bin.

I have done a post before about plastic lids, generally plastic lids are too small for current recycling technology to sort, and they are not the same type of plastic as the container/bottle they come on, so they often don’t get recycled.
Here where I am on the Sunshine Coast, our recycling plant prefers the lids to be OFF plastic bottles when you put the bottles in your kerbside recycling bin. (They won’t send the bottle to landfill if the lid is left on)
You can collect them and send them to an amazing company called Lids for Kids that initially started turning plastic bottle lids into mobility aids for children. After several months of receiving plastic lids, they had 5 million of them! and started producing many other recycled plastic products such as park benches, kitchen splash backs and cubby house roof tiles.

Recyclables don’t have to be dishwasher clean. Small amounts of food left don’t interfere with recycling process but don’t leave on chunks of pizza, tuna in the tin, half moulded yoghurt or leftover milk.
Empty the recyclables out, give it a quick rinse, shake off the water and put it in your recycling bin 👏 and you can use left over dish washing water so you aren’t wasting water.
🍕 Before putting pizza boxes in your home recycling, scrape off all the solid food scraps. There should be no solid food left in the box or a lot of grease, a little bit of grease is OK.

They mentioned the plastic lining inside the metal lids and wondered if the lids could still be recycled, and the answer is YES they can 👏
I did double check with my Council and they said “no need to remove plastic lining, just pop inside steel can, squeeze shut and it’s ready for recycling”
