I promise I don’t work for @Fat Brain Toys (if they want to talk, I’m here for it 😜), but I love almost everything they create because their toys are so simple and always developmentally appropriate.
This toy is great for toddlers who are starting to love containers and also learning about cups!
They can be used to scoop, pour, dump and stack (so many opportunities to model the sounds & words that go with these actions) in the tub on the floor in the car, or even at mealtime!

Now that you know, you won’t be able to unsee it!
Motor neurons help babies learn to imitate:
-facial expressions
-gestures
-and talking!
I have watched it happen over and over again in my 23 years as a speech-language pathologist, and it never ceases to amaze me.

These are two of my favorites, and they will last you through toddlerhood.
The first puzzle with the chunky knobs is marked for one year and up and the second one is marked for two years and up. Your child may be ready for them younger but use at your own risk. (Not sure what the risk is?)
There are so many ways to teach not only motor skills and matching, but speech with these puzzles too!
You can model animal sounds, names of animals, names of vehicles, and all the fun sounds that go with each piece. I also like to be silly and use exclamatory words like “oh no” or “uh oh” when I “accidentally” put pieces in the wrong place, and then finally get it right. Don’t forget to sing old McDonald ne Wheels on the Bus!
Let me know in the comments if you need more puzzle ideas!

Have you seen this yet? This is the Bugaboo Giraffe Complete. It has lots of add-on pieces and you can choose different sets. You can start using this right in the newborn stage to pull baby up to the table for mealtimes and use it all the way up to 220 pounds.
This is a super high-end chair and I am not necessarily advocating for spending this much money, but it is brand new and has some innovative design features, so I wanted to show it to you. You can achieve a lot of the benefits with other chairs, but this is an all-in-one option that in my opinion is better looking than some of the others out there.

Tell me what you think about this cup! I like the straw size and shape.
This cup has a valve in the straw, but it was pretty easy for me to get water out. Seems pretty leakproof!
I do think the price point is a little high at around $19. Added it to my Amazon idea list thru link in bio if you want to try it. #strawdrinking #babystraw #strawcup #toddlercup #toddlerlife #baby

Replying to @Ashley excessive gagging and vomiting is never normal. I don’t often use that word, but I really want to stress that although babies and toddlers gag sometimes and it is part of feeding development, what you’re seeing in your own child requires evaluation. Feeding therapists have lots of experience helping kids learn to manage lots of different foods, so that this does not have to happen!

Another favorite from @Fat Brain Toys ! Do you have this one? It’s wonderful for kids who are mouthing, in the stage where they love container play, and busy exploring objects with their hands and learning how to problem solve.

This process looks different for everyone. The general recommendation is to start transitioning away from bottles by 12 months, but it is in no way a firm deadline that must be applied to all children.m!
You can start introducing cups to your baby from six months if they are ready. Then you can start this process by switching out one of the bottles for milk in a cup and presenting it at the meal. Your child will then have choices!
They will likely drink less from the cup than they do from the bottle, but they should make up for what they need from their food.

What were your child’s first words?
The best words to “work on” are the words that are meaningful and relevant to either what you’re doing with your child at the moment or what they are most interested in any given moment in time.
What we know from the research is:
First words are usually words that are easy to say, high-frequency (meaning you use them often throughout your daily routines) and nouns typically emerge first.

Infants and toddlers are learning to respond to what their bodies tell them when deciding how much to eat and what to eat. When adults are worried that children’s bodies aren’t doing this well, they might try to get their child to eat more or differently. If we get in the way, this can disrupt the child’s ability to truly respond to their hunger and what they feel. If we do this, because we want our children to be nourished, but it’s a better idea to remind ourselves that we need to trust in this process and let our children learn to be competent eaters who aren’t just eating because someone else is telling them to.
This overall concept was originally described by Ellyn Satter, a registered dietitian, author, and speaker.

You can be a speech-language pathologist too!
There are so many different things that we do and so many areas of specialization. Some of us work with babies, some of us work with young children, and some of us work with school-age children, and some of us work with high school and college students and older adults! We can help people learn to understand language and communicate in all sorts of different ways. We can also help people who are having difficulty with eating or using their voice. These aren’t even all the ways that speech language pathologists can support their patients…
These elementary school students are asking the best questions- ask me yours!

Am I going to be yet another person telling you to embrace the mess?
Yes.
When your child shows you their messy hands, they might make a face like they’re uncomfortable and they might even whine or ask you to clean it.
Unless your child is in significant distress, try this:
- Notice it together
- Use a word or two that might describe the sensation your child is feeling
-You can put some on your hand too!
- Then, when it feels right and your child seems to be ready, you can offer them something to help them learn to wipe their own hands
By not wiping it off immediately, you are showing your child that it isn’t an emergency and it is not harmful to them. For some of us this is really hard to do!
But, hopefully now you understand all of the ways this can be so beneficial for your child’s learning about food!
