Antibiotic self-medication is particularly common in developing nations across Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and South America. The reasons behind self-medication vary, influenced by factors such as the health system, societal norms, economic constraints, and age or gender.
The dangers associated with self-medication include the risk of allergies, inadequate treatment, and even fatalities. Inappropriate use of over-the-counter medications like ibuprofen during influenza outbreaks has led to severe consequences, such as haemorrhagic duodenitis induced by ibuprofen. Additionally, the misuse of antibiotics has been linked to the rise of antibiotic-resistant bacterial infections in certain countries.
A questionnaire conducted in Khartoum, Sudan, revealed alarming rates of self-medication, with 48.1% of respondents admitting to self-medicating with antibiotics within the past 30 days. Furthermore, 43.4% reported self-medicating with antimalarials, and 17.5% self-medicated with both. Overall, the prevalence of self-medication with anti-infective agents reached 73.9% within the previous month. Financial constraints were identified as the primary reason for self-medication in this study.

Im Rahmen des Deutsch-Österreichischen Forschungsprojekts NutriSafe wurde eine Analyse zur Identifikation von relevanten Schwachstellen und Angriffsketten in der Wertschöpfungskette der Fleischproduktion durchgeführt. Die Untersuchung konzentrierte sich auf die IT-Infrastrukturen von fiktiven, aber der Realität nachempfundenen Akteuren in der Wertschöpfungskette. Dabei wurden Beziehungen zwischen Gefährdungen und IT-Infrastrukturen aufgedeckt sowie Angriffsketten in Form von Attack Trees modelliert.
Die Ergebnisse dieser Arbeit tragen zur Verbesserung der IT-Sicherheit bei kleinen und mittleren Unternehmen bei. Insbesondere wurde festgestellt, dass industrielle Steuersysteme (ICS) in Bezug auf Sicherheitslücken besonders kritisch sind. Dies hat Auswirkungen auf produzierende Betriebe und kritische Infrastrukturen. Die Analyse zeigte eine Vielfalt von Schwachstellen, selbst bei kleinen Betrieben in der Lebensmittelproduktion, wie z.B. Etikettendrucker und Waagenmanagementsysteme. Durch Interviews, Analyse von Referenzwerken und kreative Methoden wurde die Qualität der gewonnenen Daten sichergestellt.
Die Ergebnisse der Schwachstellenanalyse sind realitätsnah und wurden durch ein Interview mit einem IT-Sicherheitsexperten validiert. Es ist jedoch zu beachten, dass die Heterogenität der Industriestruktur in der Fleischwirtschaft eine Verallgemeinerung der Ergebnisse auf die gesamte Branche erschwert.

Angriffe auf Betriebe in der Lebensmittelproduktion und -logistik sind selten dokumentiert und werden nur selten gemeldet oder veröffentlicht. 🔬 New study: Bleeding associated with self-medication in warfarin users 🩸⚠️ Researchers in Brazil conducted a prospective observational study to examine the relationship between bleeding and self-medication among warfarin users. The study, conducted over 18 months in the municipality of Ijuí, involved 68 patients who were treated at the public health service.
The results showed that patients who took warfarin and self-medicated had a two-fold increased risk of bleeding compared to those who did not self-medicate. The bleeding rates were 37.7 cases per 100 patients per year, while the rates of thromboembolism and deaths were 4.8 per 100 patients per year.
The study also highlighted the prevalence of self-medication among warfarin users, with 58% of patients reporting self-medication with one to nine different medications during the follow-up period. Paracetamol was the most frequently reported self-medication drug, used by 75% of the participants, and 66.7% of them actually experienced bleeding.
Furthermore, the study identified potential drug-drug interactions associated with bleeding, particularly with the use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. The analysis emphasized the need for close monitoring and guidance for patients on warfarin to avoid falls, injuries, certain foods, injectable drugs, and self-medication to prevent adverse reactions.
These findings have significant implications for patient safety and highlight the importance of healthcare professionals providing comprehensive assistance to individuals taking anticoagulant medications. The study underscores the need for interventions to reduce self-medication practices and promote safer medication use among warfarin users.
