Fun fact because the palmetto tree is “spongy” the fort would get hit by the cannons and they would bounce off the fort.

the fort was able stay to together under cannon fire because the wood is so spongy it absorbed and effectively dissipated a lot of the energy

part of the story of the palmetto is that cannonballs were not only perfectly absorbed by it, but the rubbery nature caused some to bounce off.

On the state seal the palmetto tree actually stands above a fallen Oak which is the symbol for the royal British navy

sable palmeto and sable palm are different, sable palms get up to 80 ft tall, palmetos get to about 30 ft
