Replying to @eencroft With the onset of the rains this year, this #earthsmiles plot is greener and more vibrant than it has been in DECADES.
Our secret? Digging in, and letting nature do the rest. This #regreening technique helps collect rainwater, restoring ecosystems and cooling their microclimate.

Replying to @Cas (they/them) The return of wildlife is good news: it means that the area is recovering well, providing more water and food for the animals. In places where there were hardly any animals before, wildlife is now being spotted again.
So, next to cooling down, vegetation also helps to increase the (local) biodiversity! 🦒🦓🐘🐆🐅

These #earthsmiles were dug in December 2021. They capture rainwater that will otherwise get washed away over the dry, barren soil. 🌧️ Now, the seeds present in the soil get the chance to sprout, which means: #regreening 🌱🌱🌱

At this project site, we constructed 30,700 bunds so far - covering more or less 464 hectares. And the best part? In just a few short years, we can transform this landscape into a thriving ecosystem again.
🛰️ Satellite images by Planet Labs PBC, available for Justdiggit through ESA's Third Party Missions programme. We are grateful to be able to tap into high-resolution imagery to enhance our work.

We can help Mother Nature restore herself and turn degraded areas green and cool again, proving that #somethinggood can come from a little shove(l) in the right direction.
