i had to take advantage of having both a piano and power to record this while i was home after the storms knocked just about everything and everyone down—anyway, this is one of my favorite songs that i wrote in ‘22, adapted from ukulele to guitar to piano, played poorly on all of them.

it’s funny the ways people stay with us. when i was 13 or 14, my grandma picked me up from school in her powder blue toyota yaris and told me to put on a CD that was labeled “THEUN/FORTU/NATES” (slashes indicating line breaks, but otherwise all crammed together). it was a musical she had seen at the oregon shakespeare festival, which she made an annual pilgrimage to. the first track off this cast recording is “St James Infirmary Blues” and for years it was the only song i knew off of the CD because i could never get past it to listen to the other ones. i just listened to it over and over again.
i brought this song with me through high school, sang it in the dorm showers of my college, sing it as a test in recording studios, and sing it as i putter about my silly little life.
tomorrow marks the one year anniversary of my grandma’s passing. i think of her sometimes when i sing this, but honestly most of the time it’s just a song. the day this was recorded was just any other day. i did not feel her absence more keenly than at any other time. still, i am grateful for those moments where i do feel her absence or when i do remember us in the car, driving home along highway 1, hearing this for the first time. she was larger than life, and remains that way in my memory, in death. missing you lots right now, grandma.
