Straw phonation is a great way to relieve vocal tension or fatigue. These exercises are not gimmicky and there is no reason on earth they should interfere with your technique!
.
They’re helpful not only for singers, but truly for anyone who uses their voice. If you ever experience vocal fatigue, give SOVT exercises a try!!!

Runs and moving passages can be exciting, but executing them reliably and consistently isn’t easy! Don’t rely on any sort of physical movements to help you move from note to note; don’t let the jaw be involved. Just think the pitches, and always keep some mix in it!

Having a good relationship with your head voice and/or falsetto is absolutely crucial! Sometimes it is ignored by male/AMAB singers because it “doesn’t require support” or “isn’t your real voice”, but singing in head voice is a chance to help the vocal folds stretch out and decompress. It also helps us find a healthy balance in our chest voice and can help to prevent us from pushing or over-singing.
Closed vowels like “oo”, “oh”, and “ee” are my favorite vowels to use in head voice. Remember: head voice isn’t about making a lot of sound! The goal is NOT to be loud!! 🎶
Happy singing!!

Having a good relationship with your mixed voice is so important in any musical style! Here are a few exercises to help you work on strengthening your mixed voice.
.
Mixed voice is not just one single thing: it’s really a spectrum that encompasses everything between pure chest voice and pure head voice. It might be helpful to have a different proportion of head and chest on one note versus another, but whether it’s a head-dominant mix or chest-dominant mix, learning to navigate this part of your voice confidently is key to your vocal health and achieving your full potential as a singer!
