The fact is team minutes are precious and we do not have enough time to accomplish everything we need to. So, like instructional minutes, we must use our time together effectively. Slowing down, ensuring our purpose, values, vision, and norms are clear and communicated widely is worth the time. Furthermore, I believe the team should be highly invested in these. These should get us up in the morning. These inspire us. When we have success in these areas, we feel like shouting from the mountain top; we are energized! It calls for celebration!

Having a strong sense of purpose changes everything. Thank heavens, I’ve done my work and built muscle memory around my true purpose. My most important purpose is my connection to and attunement with my son. Period. And, his kind soul pays no mind to the difference between “pajamas, unshowered, and messy bun” Mama versus “polished, professional” Mama. Frankly, pajamas and messy bun Mama is far snugglier, connected, and mellow.

Another purpose of mine is to heal my heart so that I may have a kinder, gentler, and more compassionate impact during my lifetime—and I mean that as much toward myself as toward others. Again, the more I invested wholeheartedly in various new purposes, the more my values shifted, and here I am writing that book. Finally.

If your mission, vision, and values do not inspire you or your team, they need revision. In this case, they should be reviewed, revised, and co-constructed with as many stakeholders as you can get involved. The more the merrier here. We have important work to do y’all. We need all the help we can get. We also need to treat each moment for what it is: precious and fleeting. Without great missions, visions, or values too many minutes are wasted. We don’t exist as educators to jump through hoops, administer assessments, or complete mandated tasks. We are in the business of changing lives.

Had a teacher moment and remembered my top teaching survival skill and strategy: FOCUS!

Tomorrow I will be working with a fourth grade team on the science of reading, language acquisition, ELLs/MLLs, and classroom management. Y’all, it has taken be almost 20 years to get a handle on these things. How do you fit it into one day! I was stressed.

So, I walked away and worked out. Another essential survival strategy btw!

But, while moving my racing thoughts slowed and I remembered we can’t do it all. We must be laser beam focused if we want to be exceptional at anything.

So, I had to share this moment with you as it was such a huge relief to be reminded of one of my most precious and critical values: focus.

If you want to hear more about how critical focus in teaching and education is, checkout my podcast interview with Dr. Mike Schmoker.

Speaking with Dr. Schmoker reminds me of how many competing pressures teachers, administrators, parents and students feel to achieve or master so, so many skills and tasks.  During our dialogue, Mike shares his wisdom around how to create a coherent curriculum within teacher teams, he provides his ideas around how simple authentic literacies truly are, and also gives us permission to focus, focus, focus.  In other words, he illustrates by simplifying and focusing on a smaller number of shared goals, priorities, and values that we would do dramatically better in the way of student outcomes. This is a principle shared and confirmed by volumes of studies and research, including the work of Michael Fullan.

Throughout my experience in the classroom as well as in leadership, I know I have always felt a sense of constantly tumbling in an avalanche of expectations, standards, tasks, and more.  Mike uses the word shock to describe what it feels like to enter the classroom for the first time.  I want to share his message because I believe focus is one of the critical shifts we need to make in education and as parents if we want to truly make a difference in the lives of children.
