After collecting the sample which was delivered by the Osiris-Rex spacecraft, NASA did a preliminary scan of its contents and released the information on October 11th. Among the results were water and carbon - both essential building blocks to life as we know it.
Because this asteroid has been in our solar system since its beginnings, this might explain how life began on Earth, and possibly spread throughout our solar system.
The asteroid, named Bennu, also makes dangerously close and periodical passes by Earth, so the findings give insight about precautions that might be taken to avoid a future collision.
