To age better keep moving and keep challenging your body. When we are young(er) it’s so much easier to work on balance, strength and stability.
After middle age, adults lose 3% of their muscle strength every year, on average.
So how to begin if you struggle to balance on one leg.
Step 1:
Start by moving your leg forward and backwards and taking your upper body forward (like here but without the twist), with your gaze forward and when you hinge down to the floor. (You can hold on to a chair)
Next level is adding the twist while keeping your gaze forward and finally add the gaze change. Start slowly and build it up to a higher tempo. So what is the advantage besides challenging your legs, gluteus and core muscles?
You will age better!
1. Stability and fall prevention. As we age our balance tends to decline. Balancing improves proprioception (the body’s awareness in space) and strengthens the muscles involved to maintain balance. This can reduce the risk of falls and improve overall stability.
2. Core strength and posture, balancing on on one leg engages core muscles, including abdominals, lower back, and hip muscles. These muscles improve overall posture, reducing the risk of back pain.
3. Brain health and cognitive function: Balancing challenges the brain’s coordination and sensory integration abilities, stimulating neural pathways and promoting neuroplasticity. This reduces the risk of age-related cognitive decline.
4. Overall fitness and performance; balancing on one leg is a functional exercise that engages multiple muscle groups simultaneously.

Prepare your body for this deep twist.
If you are new to this pose you can stack your body weight on your elbows. Over time you can balance on placing your knee on the back of your elbow and keeping the other arm free.
Tomorrow I will show you another way to come into this pose.🌸
