This is still one of the most common questions I get. Is analog better than digital? Is digital better than analog? While I personally much prefer to blend the two using what each does best, the completely honest answer is whatever is in the room. Fantastic music can be made either way and should not hold anyone back. That said, the key to a successful mindset is to use and master the tools we have and never get caught up spending even 1 minute arguing the debate online with a stranger 😂😂 Happy mixing friends.

A tip for great sounding compression on acoustic guitars is a hi pass filter in the side chain of the compressor. Recently, we had a “first look” at the Kazrog VT-747sp on the @Produce Like A Pro channel. The 747 has a super versatile and unique side chain with a listen function as part of its compression circuit. Here’s a clip from our walk through showing how we would use it in this situation.

One of my favorite remedies for boring drum ambience tracks is heavy handed analog coloration. In this example, we are using the new @kitplugins A5 by overdriving the preamp section into audible (but pleasing) distortion, some graphic eq, and hi/lo pass filtering to create something that will lay in with the cleaner full range close mics to add some missing character. You’ll notice I was also able to move the snare drum forward a little bit. That will help propel the track by making the softer hits between the backbeats become more prominent.

Adding a little analog circuit flavor on my sub-groups is one of the very first first things I do when beginning a mix. In this clip you can hear how much more “GOOD” I am able to add to the drums with the Solid State Logic X-Saturator before I ever engage my first eq knob. Is being a musician important to being a successful engineer? In short…yes. But nonetheless, you CAN be a good recording engineer without being a musician! I have known several. The biggest tip I would have for someone in that position is learning the musician’s “lingo” so you’re on the same page during sessions. What tips do you have for our friends that find themselves in that position?

New gear Sunday is here and today I have the @AudioScape Engineering Co. EQP-A. It’s a passive tube equalizer based on a prized vintage circuit we all know and love. NOS tubes, hand wound transformers, other premium components throughout has had this on my wish list for quite a while. Finally picked up a pair and look forward to slapping them on the stereo buss. They’re in heavy demand and you may have to wait several weeks, BUT they were worth the wait for me.

A while back I was struggling with some layered guitars recorded through unimpressive amp sims. I came up with this trick to force a better and more analog tone out of them. I call it the “all boost or all buttons in” eq trick. The full video describing the method with more examples is now on the @Produce Like A Pro YouTube channel.
