We are tired of seeing Native peoples disrespected in sports.
This week, a sportscaster mocked Zack Whitecloud’s (Sioux Valley Dakota Nation) last name.
Broadcast networks must reflect & learn. Our names are proudly passed down & given to us by our relatives & ancestors.

Red Cloud Indian School has been a presence on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation for more than 130 years. While this timeline represents a small part of its history among the Oglala Lakota people, it is just one of more than 400 such schools from which Native American communities have inherited a legacy of trauma and division. We mourn the Biden Administration's decision to move forward with the ConocoPhillip's Willow Project—a multi-decade oil and gas development project on public lands in Alaska. Anti-climate decisions like this directly impact Native peoples, cultures, lands and waters. We encourage you to take the time and action you need to care for yourself and your community.

We hope that you are expressing your gratitude with those around you and to your relatives who may not walk this Earth anymore, but are still connected to us deeply. Our ancestors provide us with sacred knowledge, traditions, and ways of life that respect our homelands. We extend our love and appreciation forever and always to those who came before us and made our homes.
Kalikoonāmaukūpuna (Kaliko) Kalāhiki is a queer and māhū Kanaka Maoli student, community builder, artist, creative, and farmer. They are currently a junior at Brown University studying Critical Native American and Indigenous Studies. Their work focuses on building sustainable, supportive, loving, and caring communities for peoples from marginalized identities. To celebrate Lā o Lonoikeaweawealoha, also known as Valentine’s Day, they wanted to reflect on the love they have for their ancestors.
