Cementing our fireplace pt. 2
We used Planipatch for the cement finish.
I've used Henry's feather finish in the past (which works great!), but decided to give Planipatch a try for this one because it is so much more affordable.
Spoiler alert: it worked just as great!
Make small batches at a time, because it dries extremely fast.
Once it starts to dry, it gets clumpy and will no longer apply smooth.
Be sure to wash your bucket and trowel out after each round so you don't get any clumps in the new batch.
Before each coat was fully dry, we used a damp cloth and wiped it smooth to achieve a very smooth and somewhat likewash looking finish.
You can also sand between each coat (after it's dry, ofcourse!)
You will most likely need two coats - possibly three depending on how thin you're applying.
We did 3 coats for extra coverage and because we're both picky.
We LOVE how this fireplace turned out and it was so affordable!
Be sure to save this and part 1 for future reference.
It's very beginner friendly, anyone could do this!

Believe it or not, when we bought our home, we had no idea it had gas lines already connected for a future fireplace..talk about a happy surprise!
First, we purchased a fireplace and had it professionally installed.
Then we got to work.
We pulled off all the drywall.
This would have been much faster if we could have just knocked it down.
However, our kiddos bedrooms are right above this room and since we were working on this after they were in bed, we had to do things quietly.
So a knife and a hammer it was! 🥵
Once it was removed, I added some 2x4s and 2x6s as blocking to create a stronger and bigger surface for me to attach my future mantle to.
Then we hung the cement board which is as easy as cutting it to size and screwing it into the studs.
We covered the seams with cement board tape and then used Durabond to cover the seams/tape, screw heads, and on the corners to attach the drywall corners.
We applied it smoothly but didn't need to be too picky since we knew we would be covering it in cement anyway.
Be sure to save for future reference!

The handy tape trick works great especially when you only have a few pieces to install - but if you're working with a full kitchen, please do yourself a favor and purchase a $12 hardware jig!
Don't get me wrong, It still takes some time and you do have to do some initial measuring - but once you get going it's a breeze and saves you hours of time and loads of stress.

Don't be intimidated! Changing out a ceiling light fixture is one of the simplest changes you can make in your space.
This light has been here since my parents built their home in 1990. Like I mentioned in this video, I actually really like this light and we could have easily updated it with a bit of paint or rub n' buff.
However, after 33 years, my parents were ready and excited to try a new style and I fell in LOVE with this light from @Hunter Fan Company #gifted 😍
The fluted glass is EVERYTHING and makes the coolest design on the ceiling when the light is on.
It makes me feel like I'm in Great Gatsby times.

This beautiful rug is from the Ember collection in the colors Clay/Mist (be sure to check out the other color options too! Swoon. 😍)
It has a subtle plaid design with the prettiest neutral colors. Honestly, I can't decide where to put it because it looks incredible in every room I've tried it in!
It is also OEKO-TEX certified meaning the rug has been rigorously certified to ensure the rugs materials don't contain harmful substances, was made in an environmentally and socially responsible facility, and it has a fully traceable supply chain.
