This Teacher A̶p̶p̶r̶e̶c̶i̶a̶t̶i̶o̶n̶ Elevation Week, it’s time to #passthe🎤 .
To participate, share a teacher’s story on your social media channels (see teachersintheirpower.com or post your own). More stories will be published throughout the week.

Passing the mic is one of the best ways to support teachers and their students. Educators have a deep understanding of what’s happening in our schools, but they don’t always have the chance to be heard. By intentionally elevating the voices of teachers, we create spaces where teachers can share their experiences as professionals and as advocates for children.
Passing the mic can also help address inequities that exist in our education system. Teachers from all different backgrounds offer valuable perspectives. By amplifying their voices, we draw attention to the unique challenges of communities across the country — as well as possible solutions.

Thank you to the 20+ teachers (more than are in this video!) who worked on this with me over the past few weeks, standing in their strength and speaking their truth. As always, the Teachers in Their Power project encourages teachers to share their stories with courage, vulnerability, and conviction.
I’m grateful to the individuals who have volunteered to help amplify the teachers’ stories.
We hope you’ll join us and #passthe🎤 to a teacher.

“We cannot learn for people. We can point the souls in the right direction.
To teach is to create a space in which the obedience to truth is practiced. To become a better teacher, I must nurture a sense of self that both does and does not depend on the responses of others.
As James Baldwin points out, the paradox of education is precisely this: that as one begins to become conscious, one begins to examine the society in which he is being educated.
But no society is really anxious to have that kind of person around. What societies really, ideally want is a citizenry which will simply obey the rules. But if a society succeeds in this, that society is about to perish.
The teacher must stand both for and against the society in which she works. Because everything depends on the person who stands in front of the classroom. What we need more than anything else, is not text books, but text people.
Each class should be a palace built in time, a cathedral built in time, a place where we live and worship, where we nourish others, and where we are nourished.
Teachers nourish us.”
–Dr. Daniel McMahon
I recently found this speech on YouTube and am sharing my favorite portions of it. It reminds me of so many still moments, listening to colleagues share their thoughts on life and learning. Thank you to DeMatha Catholic High School for permission to edit and post.

Many of my favorite teacher tributes are hakas performed by schools in New Zealand.
More than anything else I've seen, the haka captures the emotional energy and life force of a group of students impacted by their teacher.
This farewell haka for Thomas Bartlett was posted with the following message:
“Mr. Bartlett - Thanks for the mahi you have put into Manurewa Intermediate over the past 5 years. Incredibly calm, highly competent and focused – you had a strong positive influence over both students and staff. The incredible work ethic, strength of character and self-discipline, alongside your detailed planning and preparation for all you do has led to your next opportunity as a principal. You are a great example of real servant leadership and care for, and interest in, our community! “Hoki whakamuri, kia anga whakamua”: Look to the past in order to forge the future.”
