Heard about this thing called “Rosebank”? 🙃🫠
Rosebank is one of the largest undeveloped oil & gas field located off the Scottish coast. It contains around 300 million barrels of oils and is owned by Equinor (Norwegian energy company) and Ithaca Energy (UK).
So, why is it all over the news? Because the drilling (thus exploiting the field) has just been approved by the UK government.
What’s the problem? Well, fossil fuels aren’t great. They cause climate change, pollute the air when burnt (causing health issues), etc… Granting new licenses to exploit oil and gas fields is backward!
We should not develop new oil and gas projects, but instead use currently exploited fields to accelerate and bootstrap more renewable sources of energy. Clearly, the Rosebank approval is sending the wrong signal: we’re still looking at our shoes instead of looking at the horizon.
Long term wins > short term wins.

California is suing the five biggest oil and gas companies: ExxonMobil, Shell, Chevron, ConocoPhillips and BP, as well as the American Petroleum Institute, alleging that they knew that using their products led to climate change, but then spent decades misleading the public.
In fact, over the last few years, investigations have shown that companies like ExxonMobil were aware of climate change, as early as in the 70s, long before it became a public issue; but spent millions to promote disinformation.
