Pierce my septum?
Anyone else wake up with their own poems stuck in their head? This is one of my favourite things I’ve written this year, and further evidence of my belief that every poem is a love poem.
Five autumns ago, I used my inheritance from my recently transitioned maternal grandmother to buy the flute of the recently transitioned flutist-composer-poet Katherine Hoover. This instrument has always for me been a means of channeling female lineage and connecting with the spirits of these two ancestors. It’s a gorgeous instrument and it’s been there for me through the most intense and busiest chapter of my career (2018-2019), the years I thought I’d never play again (2020-2021), and the time I fell back in love with making music in the way only I can (2022-2023).

I am not the cleverest flutist, the fastest flutist, the most polished flutist. But I am an art witch who, with this most special instrument in my hands, will weave you stories that matter, stories full of love. And standing behind me are so many people who have poured into me directly or indirectly through the legacies to which I belong.

Chasing Metaphors has been five years in the making and it would be an honor for you to be there with me. October 20.

We deserve to feel calm, easeful, and spacious when we play the flute!
This week I began my fall practice rituals in preparation for two very exciting recitals.

On Friday, October 20, I will perform Chasing Metaphors: The Music & Words of Katherine Hoover as a part of Chatham University’s Friday Musicale series.

And on Sunday, November 12, I will present my winner’s recital from the Pittsburgh Concert Society Major Artist competition that I won last spring.

Stay tuned as I share about the process of preparing for these events, as well as what I’ve got planned for the spring performance season. And if there’s anything you’ve ever wondered about the behind the scenes of being a professional musician, feel free to ask and I’d be happy to answer in a post or video!
