I haven’t used the big kiln for a long time. It’s a bit difficult to achieve homogeneity in this 40 year old 1000 liter kiln at 1240 degrees. Now that I have the opportunity to fill the kiln with a few orders together, let the fun begin. It is very exciting for me to wait for the opening of the kiln on Monday.

My first 3.5 kg porcelain bowl! Porcelain clay is a really difficult material in pottery. And then drying it to avoid bottom cracks is also difficult. But the result fascinates us all. The porcelain series of the new Fine Collection is on its way!

We have come to the end of the new project videos I shared last time. I have completed the first 50 trials and I will make 250 more in the rest of the process. Even if I cannot announce our project partner yet, I am confident that it will be a successful collaboration.

Trimming is an obsession for me. To extract beauty from a rough form down to every fine detail. It makes me feel like I am working like a sculptor. Rather than just creating an aesthetic product, it makes me create a plate that must work exactly right after firing. We are making this series of plates for @jan_diekjobst for his restaurant. I hope he will enjoy using the plates as much as I enjoyed the process🙌🏻

I am making again Brotdose in all seriousness😂
I use 8 kg of clay to make this largest size Brotdose. I center it in two pieces because I am not as fit as I used to be. Although I always design the Brotdose with a wooden lid, and I need to make an extra lid-sized form to avoid warping during drying and firing. This takes a 10 kg package of clay. Thankfully, in the last weeks I have prepared enough clay to fill two wooden boxes in the workshop. I want to make a few more batches of Brotdose soon and update the stocks.
For those who are curious, Brotdose is a pot used in the kitchen to preserve bread for longer. And it really keeps it fresh longer without wrapping it in plastic or paper bags. What method do you use to store bread at home?

We are approaching the end for the first trial of the new project. We wanted to experiment with 50 mugs for this order, which we will make 300 pieces in the first batch. The next step will be decal firing on them. They look pretty good, what do you think?

Last week, a customer from our town asked for a new big bowl. Her 20 years old watering can has broken. So I made a 15cm high and 40cm diameter big bowl with 7kg of clay on the pottery. I will glaze the bowl with Hazel Brown and I hope it will be there for more than 20 years.

Part 3 Handle!
How do we make the handles of our mugs? Immediately after trimming the bottoms of the mugs, we stick softer pieces of clay to our leather-hard mugs and shape the handles by pulling. No one can hold a candle to Klaus in this regard. Klaus has been pulling handles in this workshop for about 55 years. I can imagine him pulling about 50 handles in an hour, but I can't prove it.😅 That's why I prefer to watch him.

New project part 2. Trimming!
The second most important step in the pottery process that most people enjoy watching. By trimming the base of the product, a foot is created for the product to stand more firmly on the ground. It is also possible to reduce the wall thickness on the side profile of the product. Normally, it is more preferable for me to shave only the bottom base of the product, because the fingerprints on the surface of the pottery product are wiped off. And i really like to see them. In this order, I am trying to make the wall surfaces of the mug smoother since it will be decal printed. I look forward to sharing the result!
