Here’s a demonstration on teaching your dog to drop things and also using the cue “take it. Teaching “take it” let’s the dog know it’s their turn rather than jumping or barking (which would be reinforced even more by me offering the toy!).
Fade the treat away when your dog is dropping the toy regularly but be sure to offer the toy as the reward quickly when that time comes.

Should your reactive dog be around other dogs or other triggers? The answer is YES and NO!
To make progress, we should do two things for our reactive dogs.
1. Exposing them to their triggers in a planned way, at a safe distance. I call these "set ups" and they involve finding places where you know there will be dogs but can be far enough away for your dog to observe them without exploding. During the set ups we reinforce the response that is desired (glancing at a dog without barking, sniffing downwind from a dog, showing interest without pulling, etc.)
2. The second thing is to provide them with opportunities to play, run, sniff - without ANY triggers. Time to decompress and relax.
If you need help, my Relief for Reactive Dogs Program is packed with tips and shows live set ups and "before and afters" with several reactive dogs.

Training “leave it” is a great skill for all dogs, but I do find it really handy for reactive dogs. It’s about teaching your dog to take their attention off of something. For me it means taking their eyes off of the subject (treat, toy, bird, dog). This could also be a dropped pill, the cat at home, another dog, or something else. I try to train this is fairly as possible by including “take it”. Take it teaches the dog that they deserve something for listening and having patience (don’t we all?). It also teaches them trust. I want to clarify that making a dog wait too long for anything isn’t really fair, especially when it comes to food, but teaching a dog to not jump up on you while you put a food bowl down or throw a toy is good for both of you (they get the food or toy and you are not jumped on). By training this I can build up to asking Buster to leave it when he sees another dog on a walk but we have to build carefully and fairly first.

Sometimes it can be challenging to teach a small dog (or puppy) “down” because their little butt pops up. This “bridge” can be a great solution.
1. Use a mat, because dogs definitely prefer to lay down on softer surfaces.
2. Lower your dog back-and-forth many times so they feel comfortable going under your legs before you start training down.
3. Once your dog is comfortable lower your legs, 1 inch before they enter the bridge, continue back-and-forth until they’re more comfortable going under your legs with a smaller opening.
4. Once they are comfortable hold a treat longer so they can nibble on it and relax into a down. It’s OK to adjust their leg once or twice to help them but try to wait them out and have it happen naturally
5. Immediately start verbal praise and release the treat as soon as they lay down. Say “good down” so they learn the word.
6. Move your legs away as you progress.
7. Replace the food with a hand signal ass soon as possible.
8. By all means HAVE FUN 💕

A little video showing a child training a puppy.
(I apologize that this is the back end of the puppy but I was more focused on protecting the child). I have added a photo of Lucky so you don’t feel cheated 😂

Dogs that have been punished harshly in the past often show signs of it. They aren’t eager to try (like dogs should be), they can be nervous and unsure of themselves. Be careful when you train your dog! Using products and methods that hurt them can shut them down and rather than learn, they start guessing to try to please. That’s not a fun way to live! Let’s treat our dogs the way they deserve to be treated. Just like we would a friend 💕.

Some tips for teaching your dog to come when called. In this video I’m not training with the actual word “come” because I don’t have high value treats with me, I would save it for that and then I would taper the treats out until I didn’t need them! If I’m not 100% sure a dog is going to come when called I will use their name or any other words. If I overuse or misuse the word “come” it will lose its value and I personally believe it’s one of the most important cues that there are so I’m really careful with it. You can still teach your dog to come when called without saying the actual word as I do here! I save come for emergencies and I train it hard before I ever expect a dog to do it.

When used correctly treats are powerful for driving and changing behaviors. When working on new skills, use them freely, give more than you think is necessary and, by all means, make a plan to fade them out (once the behavior is established). I find people reward LESS than they should and this applies to all rewards: play, treats, verbal and physical praise. I encourage you to shower your dog with delicious treats and love while you work on things you want to change but be sure to learn about timing so you don’t inadvertently train the wrong behavior. Dog training should be fun and rewarding for you AND your dog! #dogtrainingtips #dogsoftiktok #dogadvice #dogadviceforbeginners #dogtips #dogtraining #dogtok
Here’s a simple video to show you how to start training your dog “quiet”. We need to repeat that word many, many times so the dog learns what it means. But basically anytime your dog is not barking they are being quiet! Reinforce this at times when your dog doesn’t bark (when they normally would have). You can play games as a reward while the sounds are going on or simply offer a treat, or both!

Training with LOTS of distractions! Mater is a very friendly guy and we are working with him to be in public without greeting every person he sees. He’s learned quickly that focusing on him Mama is better than greeting everyone. It’s not that we don’t want him to be friendly, that is wonderful and we will continue to encourage that at the appropriate time but there are moments where we’re going to need him to focus in busy settings like this. So, we reinforce the behavior we want and then we will add a cue to it like “watch me”, we will also fade out the treats (but this is just day one). He did GREAT. The treats are hidden, we are not using them to lure him but obviously he knows we have them. He gets one when he practices the behavior we want. Dogs learn by association so we are reinforcing (rewarding) him for ignoring people. This helps him learn that is not appropriate in public. #dogsoftiktok #dogtraining #dogtips
Reactivity can be cured, don’t give up! We need to redirect the reactions from something negative (barking, pulling, etc) to something positive, like connecting with the human and being rewarded for ignoring the distractions.
