How Coca-Cola Failed in New Zealand!

Coke is a mastermind when it comes to creating engaging campaigns and making people want to be associated with it.

Rarely any other band has been able to replicate the success of Coca Cola's campaigns on a global scale. It has inspired brands to think out of the box and come up with engaging and creative strategies.

But this does not mean Coke has always got it right with its campaigns!

One of the biggest challenges for brands is the chance of getting their messages lost in translation in international markets. And this is what happened with Coca Cola.

The intended 'Greetings, Mate' message got translated into 'Greetings, Death' and for the most part, Coke is to be blamed.

While the intention was pretty innocent, Coca Cola's team overlooked the important step of cross checking the meaning of a 'Mate' in New Zealand's native language, Te Reo Māori.

This simple step caused the entire campaign to backfire, and this was a campaign that had garnered success on a massive scale all across the globe!

A strong lesson on the importance of Cultural Context, this is something every marketer, every brand, and every business should be mindful of!
